The hills are alive (with fire)

Only way this gets put out is by it absolutely pissing down which unfortunately doesn't seem likely anytime soon, the fire service can only really contain it to protect property. It's just so vast, and it burns underground. Remember my uncle who was a Firefighter telling me that he spent every working day for 6 weeks fighting fires on the same moorland, think it was that hot Summer in 76.

Ive been an auxiliary fire fighter here in Oz, one tactic used here for bush fires is to create a fire break, ie burn some vegetation and create an area/strip where there is nothing left to burn, this stops it spreading and is very effective.

Sounds good, but do you have soil (if that's the right word) like peat in oz? It can stay alight underground for days and travel until it springs up somewhere else. It would also take a hell of a lot of firefighter's, plenty of water to douse it (in pretty remote area's) to make it safe.

No we dont have Peat here in Queensland, but we may do in places down south where its wetter and colder like Tasmania

Exactly. It's the peat itself which catches fire in this case, so fire breaks are next to useless.
