This sounds very much like a Viz top tip - the solution of wearing no socks at all stops you getting holes in the toes and heels.

Back in the day, certainly when I played, players would pull their socks down. I think the FA outlawed this in the 70s/80s? Am I right?

I think so. It was about this time that shin pads were becoming compulsory at all levels and it's tricky wearing shin pads if your socks are rolled down.
