I think it starts becoming more guesswork at some point - the last two are almost certainly too long ago to be readily comparable without a lot of work.

A Liverpool fan called Paul Tomkins has a pretty good website called TomkinsTimes or similar which had this kind of price index for a hundred players. I've just checked and it seems a bit buggy right now - I don't know how up to date it is.
