Playing the guitar?

Mate I started in March (admittedly midlife crisis age group and probably not far from the truth!!)
I find it quite difficult and sometimes frustrating but Im keeping at it and enjoy it. Regret big time is not trying it earlier in my life.

I used my father-in-laws guitar at first but have since bought my own acoustic two months ago...spent 300 notes on an Ibanez. I try to play about an hour a day.
Be prepared for some finger pain and some hurt muscles as your using ones you may not have used before. Youll need to be patient too (not high on my CV) but its very rewarding when it comes off.
I also find it nigh on impossible to sing with complicated strumming patterns. Saw Johnny Marr in concert on Sunday, jesus dont know how the hell he can sing with his lead guitar riffs. New found respect for the man.

You will want to try out different picks as this may have an impact on the sound. Youll need to buy capo as well.

I can recommend these websites for beginners...These are just my opinions.

This fella is good for absolute beginners, tells you how to hold the thing etc

AndyGuitar.co.uk

These fellas Georgiarose & Wayne Guitar are great for breaking down Oasis (and similar stuff)

This is a great site for songs showing what chords to play etc,
https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

Have a great time with it anyhow

.........Start by learning the 7 basic Major chords in open position ABCDEFG, spend a month or so doing this

Then learn a song, and easy one, there are thousands of songs with only 3 chords so do a Google search for a list and pick one that you like, something very easy like Song Sung Blue by Neil Diamond, the chords are C F & G.

........

Something very easy.... with an F in it !! Ooh you are a one!

Self taught, got a massive Beatles chord book, requires an amazing amount of patience. been playing about 23 years now.

I play mainly acoustic when at home, electric with the band,i'm always learning though, learnt Life on Mars last month and could it be magic by Barry Manilow, get a good tuner as well and a string winder/cutter to.

Also a nice little tip when putting on new strings, preferably more electric than acoustic but give them a stretch, when they're on tune them up then get each string and stretch it and retune, not going mad but it will save them going out of tune when playing and your doing a bit of lead.

I am in a band with the lads I went to school with. I'm 51 now and have been at it for 35 years. I play a Hofner Verythin guitar. I taught myself to play from a Bert Weedon book and listening to early Beatles songs. Those were the days before the Internet! I thoroughly recommend playing, it's given me countless hours of pleasure and for a relatively cheap outlay it can you too.

bought myself an electric and small amp about 18 months ago, always wanted to play, never taken the plunge before

it's hard, very hard, the post about stone fingers is spot on

Or it could be that being tone deaf imposes its own restrictions

got to the stage where I could just about bat out happy birthday with a deep purple overtone and then gave up, it's one of those things I'll try again later

Just started. Using the Justinguitar app and website. Bought electric as seems easier to play to begin with and can practice without subjecting neighbours to countless
botched chords. Enjoying it so far. Not the worlds most talented musician to be fair but that's part of what of what I find enriching about it.
