HS2 - Cancel it now

How much is the estimated cost today?

Taken From: http://stophs2.org/facts

When a new high speed railway was first mooted as an alternative to expanding Heathrow airport, the suggestions were that this would cost about £18billion. However when the HS2 proposal was firmed up and made public, Phases 1 and 2 were expected to cost £33billion in total, with Phase 1 opening in 2026 and Phase 2 in 2033. By 2013, this had risen to £42 billion, excluding the cost of the trains. A further review set the funding envelope for delivery of the full HS2 scheme of £55.7bn at 2015 prices.

Whenever has a major rail project been brought in on time and on budget?

West coast main line overran by years and should have been 160 mph linespeed but only managed 140mph. Loads of Yankee mangers imported for their expertise, on humongous wages too. Some stayed so long they were able to get British citizenship ( that doent mean they became City supporters).

Crossrail literally years behind

'Great' Western years behind

Channel tunnel - debt write off of £ 3400m with a negative NPV of -£8billion (whatever that means!)

Only God knows how much HS2 will cost and when it will be completed.. You atheists will have less of a clue.

I tell you now, it will be nowhere near on budget, and nowhere near on time.

You could be lucky though, you may be one of the huge numbers of lucky f*ckers who are going to make a fortune out of the balls up.
If your going to spend..£120b-£150b to knock off 1/2hr Manc2London.
And your going to employ the fkers who have jumped ship from crossrail (high end managers.who screwed the fk out of that project 2 screw another obscene amount
Thats a big fk off problem straight away.
My opinion we should be going for the mono-rail system(magnetic system)More future realistic.
London spending crossrail £15-£19b
Super sewer £5-£9b
Channel tunnel upgrade £5-£10b
I know for a fact the money that crossrail have wasted/writing off on certain fk ups is mind boggling.
But fk all ever happens and nowt will
Job for the boys..

1. anyone who thinks this is completely unnecessary has no clue
2. this is about capacity not speed
3. the very act of building it will shove billions into the construction industry and retain skills we're in danger of losing
4. will indeed get Manchester to London down to 68 minutes - scousers not so lucky ha ha...
5. its started already and much like the aircraft carriers, there's no turning back, at least not on the Brum to London bit
You wanna tell this clueless traveller why it's 'necessary' to save half an hour getting to London?

Mottram Moor used to be a nightmare, now, even getting on to Mottram Moor is a piss take. If you coming from Barnsley direction traffic is now often backed up to the reservoirs.
It'll be put back again and again. It wouldn't happen in the South East!!!
Born & brought up on Hattersley, still live close by. This bypass has been promised since I was a kid & a single spade hasn't hit the ground yet.
As has already been said, there's not a chance that a road this important would have been left at the same capacity as the 50's would it have had a London postcode.
The population within 5 miles of Mottram Moor must have tripled in just the last 15 years.
I personally have looked at houses in the Broadbottom/Tintwistle/Dinting areas but have always been put off due to the traffic problems.

Over £100 Billion on track that will no doubt buckle in the summer, contract in the winter, not cope well in the rain or with wet leaves..........

Hell of a lot of money to see a train going at 30mph for safety reasons.

Still the South East of England will benefit so lets push on.

No the trains will have the usual amount of carriages filled with people sat and stood in cramped conditions whilst a couple of first class ones down the front are empty.

All about getting London workers living within 2 hours commute in to work on time and back home again for an exorbitant season ticket price no doubt.

New lines in the North, new rolling stock is whats needed and it needs to be an affordable, on time mode of transport that gets us out of cars.
