I had it a long time ago. Came on suddenly one morning.
You might laugh but i honestly thought they were digging the road up outside the house. It was early on a Sunday morning, and i could hear the jack hammers "ring" sound.
I was just about to get up and go tell them to pack it in when i noticed the wife waking up. I told her what i was doing and she just looked at me funny.
She asked what "ringing" noise i was on about. I said the jack hammers outside, and threw the curtains open to show her.
Yep, i was astonished to see absolutely nobody there!
That's when the horror struck me. This ringing sound wasn't real and was just in my head. It was so loud and so clear. I started to panic a bit.
I tried everything. Cotton buds, olive oil. I went to Tesco's to get some Otex ear drops. It was awful, nothing worked.
The worst thing about it is the normal thing you do to shut sounds out actually have the opposite effect. Finding a quiet place and sticking your fingers in your ears actually makes the sound louder. I kept walking around shaking my head thinking it must be wax or a inner ear blockage. The Doctor was next to useless. He examined my ears and declared them clear. Told me i would have to just learn to live with it!
The dark side of this condition is the depression. I decided early on that i couldn't live with it. It was constant and all consuming. Nothing in my life was the same.
I was seriously considering ending it all. I just wanted it to stop. I can totally understand why it drives people mad.
Thankfully in my case it stopped after a few months. I cannot remember now if it was sudden or gradual. I seem to remember some days it was better than others. Then i think the good days out numbered the bad. I do remember thinking (when i realized it had gone) that i would be thankful every day of my life.
People who haven't had it, just think that it's a joke and a bit of ringing sound in the ears. They have no idea how soul destroying it is. I found it wasn't the sound that bothered so much. It was the fact that it was constant and you had no way of switching it off or getting away from it.
What do you think is the cause. Have you been exposed to high noise levels?Yeah mine came on very suddenly too. I was sat watching tv and it was like someone just flicked a switch and turned the ringing on, but it’s just never stopped since then.
My hearing is awful but luckily dont suffer tinnitus.I put mine down to working in telecoms sector too using tones and amplifiers to identify cable pairs.though the missus thinks my deafness is quite selective when sport is on tvI have been diagnosed with accute tinatus through 'industral injury' by a audiologist last May. The ringing in my ears was so bad it was causing me anxiety and irregular sleep. The industrial injury I put down to RF and EMF exposure working in telecommunications. I have to wear hearing aids but I cannot get used to them, so I haven't worn them for a couple of months. The audiologist recommended eating red meat(especially steak) stop smoking, reduce caffeine, cold showers and
multivitamins to alleviate to tinatus. Fuckin' bizzare I think. It's something I'm slowly getting used to and the high pitch ringing is getting worse tbh.
I intend to wear the hearing aids regularly but I can't say whether they help or not though.
Was just reading all the messages and was going to post about Craig - a City fan too - who I knew very well. Took up drumming at 14 with the Carpets and never used ear protection and was DJing over many nights too....Horrible affliction, I don't have any advice other than try to be asleep, but fucking hell people kill themselves over it.. The drummer in Inspiral Carpets did, it's like scitzophrenia for the deaf
