Same trophy, different name. First Division and Premier League, even with a change in trophy, is still the same thing. Milk Cup, Littlewoods Cup, Rumbelows Cup, Coca Cola Cup, Wirthington’s Cup, Carling Cup, Caraboa Cup; even changing the actual trophy presented between 1981-1990 and even changing names from the Football League Cup to the EFL Cup - has always been the same thing. Charity Shield and Community Shield is still the same thing.

Derby won the league and Leeds won the FA Cup the previous season but both declined to play in the Charity Shield.
City had finished fourth and had won nowt the season before, played against Villa who were Third Division champions.
