Bereavement leave followng death of a pet

This is likely to get those who think there is a "snowflake" generation howling in an apoplexic rage but is there a case to be made here? Personally think the lady should have just rung in sick but a bit of compassion from her employer wouldn't have gone amiss.
Always been happy to hand out bereavement leave in these circumstances, it can be every bit as upsetting as losing a human family member. What's the point of forcing someone to work when they're obviously not in the right state of mind?

Where will all this bereavement madness end?

I went away last weekend. I think maggots escaped from a bait tub sometime last week. When I got home my house was full of flies. Fuckin' loads of 'em dead now and I'm gutted. They were my pets. I expect at least a month on the sick grieving for each and every one of them: /
