Var debate 2019/20

I think it's because they know that parts of the game rely, and always have done, on a flexible interpretation of the rules. But VAR removes any flexibility from the rules, it's black or white. If you actually enforce the rule that the keeper has to keep both feet on his line (and they tried to do it about 10 years ago), it basically makes it almost impossible for the keeper to save it. So you give them a bit of flexibility to step a bit forward in the process of diving, but pull them up if they take the piss. VAR ruins your ability to do that because as soon as people look at the replay, it's clear the keeper is off his line, and ask why it wasn't pulled up. So instead they just say that it's not going to be used for that purpose.

But with handball, we've got the opposite problem of a fairly nuanced area being shoehorned into a binary interpretation. It seems to me that some 'confusion' around the handball rule has been manufactured in the past year or so to justify this rule change where intent has been removed from the handball rule. And the reason for that is that intent can't be judged by VAR, without the referee having to go over and rewatch the footage. So it's easier to just say that any handball in the lead up to a goal will disallow the goal, no matter how innocuous and accidental it is, and any handball potentially preventing a goal leads to a penalty. Basically, we've got a situation where instead of VAR being used to enforce the existing rules, the rules are being changed to fit in with VAR. I have absolutely no problem with VAR in principle, but like the offside call the other day, now they've got it, they're trying to create this situation where it's some all-knowing, infallible piece of technology instead of admitting that there can still be doubts. The handball rule should have remained the same with VAR only overturning clear and obvious mistakes like they supposedly do with penalties, and like they should do with offsides.
That's so clearly and absolutely correct, the rules are being shaped by VAR, which is utterly wrong.

OK I never had to think to long about this but the message it's plain and simple, we should chant this for 90 minutes at Bournemouth away

FUCK VAR
FUCK VAR
FUCK VAR
FUCK VAR
FUCK VAR
FUCK VAR
FUCK VAR
FUCK VAR

By the way, this is not a joke: we are 100% going to see defenders attempting to pull attackers arms in to the way of balls in to the box now. It will rarely come off, but defenders will do it anyway because they know the governing bodies have painted themselves in to a corner and cannot “reinterpret” the rule as it stands halfway through the season. It should be a foul, a yellow card, and penalty for conduct contravening the spirit of the game (attempted cheating), mind, but they won’t do any such thing until they can “clarify” rule again, which will be next close season.

And if they do actually relax the rule sometime *after* the incident in our match, without any compensation to City, we’ll know it was either corruption, incompetence, or (more likely) both.
There’s the crux, it will only be deemed unfair or needing to be resolved/changed when it starts impairing the favourite 5 or more specifically the cash cow 2.it will be totally irrelevant how badly it has impacted our season by then, it’s not inconceivable that this is actually the long game dreamt up by the corrupt twats at both red shite clubs and premier league bosses to fuck us up beyond repair then move the goalposts on the pretence it’s because of the bad decisions we keep receiving.

Var wasn't introduced to prevent us winning.
It's been in the pipeline for years, getting slowly introduced in various formats before landing in the prem.
Some say (with good reason) it's benefitting the old cartel teams but we are only 2 games in. If we'd finished a quarter of our chances today it wouldn't even be under discussion,.
This performance today was brilliant, I believe we will comfortably win the league on this display, and we will only get better.
Pep very diplomatic post game, he knows var shouldn't affect us if we're at it.

Correct it wasn’t introduced to prevent us winning. However it is and will be used as a weapon against us We should be top of the league 6 points 9 for 2 against and we aren’t

Pre VAR you had the chance that a referee / linesmen was either very poor with decisions or had an agenda.

Uefa now have the opportunity to influence the decision of a game which they couldn’t do previously.

Decisions need to be made using all camera angles i have only seen one camera angle and at the weekend Sky had more camera angles than VAR.

You hope that decisions may even oit but remember last season where there was another camera angle of the handball at tottenham but never presented to the referee.

We need time keeping to be removed from referees and shown on the scoreboard including a countdown timer showing exactly how long is left in the game. Also the VAR team to have the influence like the push yesterday that when the ball went out of play they instruct the referee that there was a clear penalty. Yes it puts the pressure on the referee and he can over rule it but chances are the Var will be correct.

Expect more controversy in the Champions league

Not read the whole thread, so apologies if I’m repeating a common sentiment here, but...

I like the concept of VAR but the implementation is utter bullshit. There is absolutely no need to review every goal -
make it like it is in Rugby League, if the ref has doubt he can ask for it to be reviewed. I also wouldn’t be opposed to a limited manager challenge. I don’t believe the ref had any concerns over our goals last week, or this.

Reviewing every goal is already meaning the explosion of emotion that comes with a goal is becoming muted, and that will truly ruin the game.

That, coupled with the stupid new handball rule, and the ridiculous claim that offside is ‘black and white’ while some random tech guy is drawing lines on a blurry image and deciding the moment the ball was ‘struck’ without any kind of verification has us verging on clusterfuck.

Also, we’ve got into a situation where we’re trying to find miniscule reasons to rule out a goal - isn’t this supposed to be entertainment ffs?

Absolutely nailed it.

“The referees’ chief Mike Riley has revealed that video assistant referees will not impose the tough line on handballs in the Premier League next season that has led to numerous controversial penalties in the Women’s World Cup and Champions League.

Riley, the managing director of the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL), said that many of the penalties awarded for handball in the Women’s World Cup and Champions League — including those awarded against Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose and Moussa Sissoko in the Champions League quarter-final and final respectively — would not be given in the Premier League.

The former top-flight referee said that officials will be told to minimise the disruptive impact of VARs by having “a high line of intervention”. It comes after fears that overuse of video reviews is ruining the flow and spectacle of the game. Despite the handball law, which came into force across all competitions last month, Riley thinks that there is flexibility for English football to interpret it in a way that will not cause a big increase in the number of spot-kicks.

It was revealed last month that VARs in the Premier League will not rule on whether a goalkeeper moves off the line at penalties, leaving that decision to on-field officials, and that referees will be told not to consult pitchside monitors to minimise delays

So Mr rag Riley what changed, did Mr Graham Scott not get the message, or did he apply the exception, except when it’s City?
