How does a bureau de change make money?

I'd think because you are buying 500 euros and they buy 500,000 euros so will be getting a better rate than you. The difference is their profit.

No, they just give you their own shit rate with a 10% margin built in.

The Post Office offered awful rates over the independent places. I was surprised by that.

They were being swines with change in Albania. Try paying for a 350 Lek beer with 1000 note and nowhere would accept it citing no change. You had to end up buying a few and having a tab.

My taxi driver, the Albanian version of Victor Meldrew, was giving it “I hate the English. You are all bastards.” I tried to explain I was Welsh but he didn’t understand. He seemed taken aback by the tip too.

By fucking you over and pocketing the difference between the interbank exchange rate they get and the crap exchange rate they give you.

Get a Halifax clarity card.
Use it abroad at an ATM to get cash out.
Even though you will pay a small amount of interest until you pay off the card at the end of the month it is more than made up for by giving you the interbank rate.

Or open a Starling account and use your debit card to withdraw money abroad. It doesn’t cost anything.

i've a Santander Zero card and do the same. The difference is that before I go, I put, say, £500 on the card. That way, you're in credit, and they can't charge you interest on your own money.

Been doing this for over 25 years, and never paid a penny in interest.
