Justin Trudeau

Black lad in work has just said all this isn't racist and that when people start finding racism in all sorts of trivial little things then it actually undermines the real thing.

He wants to know if soldiers out on nighttime exercises who black their faces up are also racist. The whole world has gone insane with shit like this, if he just blacked up his face and went out shopping then that's one thing, to do it for a fancy dress party is pretty harmless, especially 20 years ago, as no offence was meant, though i expect he wishes he hadn't done it.

I mate of mine went to our college’s end of term party as Bob Marley and blacked up for it.

He won best costume and got a bottle of rum as the prize.

This was 2008.

Another one is that a guy I know went to a fancy dress party, at a bar, dressed as a famous black female singer, can’t remember which one but his mate was supposed to be bringing his wig.

He gets there and his mate has forgotten the wig so now he’s at this party, blacked up, just wearing a green dress.

He goes in the toilet to wash off the paint and there’s three black lads giving him daggers in there. This being in a small market town in Derbyshire with next to no minorities.

I don’t know why I find it so funny as it is dodgy ground but it’s just how awkward he must have felt.

It was almost 20 years ago. I’m sure we all did/said things 20 years which we’d rather people didn’t know about but also that we wouldn’t do again

It’s a non issue, as far as I’m concerned
It is, of course, a non issue. If I blacked up now and walked down the street, I'd probably just get laughed at and escorted back home. The interesting question is who exactly wants to see Trudeau's reputation damaged. No way on earth is he a racist based on what I've heard/seen. They're trying to highlight his privileged background in the same way as Prince Harry's choice of WW2 attire was news. I don't think JT has handled it very well by saying he doesn't remember.

I think that if he did it today then it would be an issue, particularly given his status - I’m generally uncomfortable with people trawling through people’s previous activities and looking for reasons to criticise/discredit. Unless it is a major scandal or crime, of course

I’m going to take a wild guess that the people criticising him for this are the type of people that ironically band the word ‘snowflake’ around?

Christ when I become PM they are going to have a field day with my social media accounts especially the pics from my stag Do!

That could be a very long answer SWP. A big part is that he has instituted some seriously misguided energy policies and made some decisions which are infantile in their reasoning. No other resource rich country has shot itself in the foot like Canada on some 'virtuous' campaign, all the while importing oil from those paragons of virtue Saudi, Nigeria, Venezuela etc. It is handing over literally 100's of Millions a week to the US because that's the only place Canada can sell its oil, at a heavily discounted price, and Justin cancelled pipeline projects to tidewater that would have alleviated this, that had all been through years of review and had been approved, on some seriously misguided 'environmental' crusade.

Canada, one of the richest resource countries on earth, had a 14BN deficit last year and it continues to grow.

He's a smarmy twat on top of it all.

He's probably a rag to boot.

So is 'blacking up' when in costume as Aladdin racist? If so, why?

Aladin wasn't black so ignorant is probaly the answer.

The original translations set it in some of the hidden cities of china, historically that is a reference to areas in the uzbeckistan area.

So if anything he would have been persian.

And tbf in 1441 when doing shakesspears othello then a lack of black actors meant people blacking up for shows, by the 1900s it was more used to mock african americans so in that continent alone ot is a bit stupid to think people won't criticise.

Personally I think it was 20 years ago and a bit pathetic to drag it up.

However it is considered poor taste now so just don't do it
