He’s still naive - every time he gets the ball he dribble at full speed pointlessly into congestion, like he’s messing about in the street with his pals, closing off most passing angles for himself; if he’s going to become a top midfielder he should be aware of his options before he receives it, look to play them within two or three touches, and only dribble when necessary, rather than by default.

For that reason, I can understand why he doesn’t play more, but at the same time Guardiola has had two years to develop his football IQ, and seemingly hasn’t bothered.

Kai Havertz and Odegaard are similar in style and talent to Foden, only a year older but light years ahead in terms of experience and tactical development - he simply needs to be playing, for his own benefit and the club’s.

Pellegrini won a league with a midfield of Fernandinho, Toure, Garcia, Nasri, Milner, Silva and Navas.

Indeed injuries do happen - Liverpool played most of last season with Keita and AOC injured, leaving them with Henderson, Milner, Fabinho and Wijnaldum but still got 97 points and won the Champions League; Pep has had more than enough midfield talent at his disposal to win everything.

The solution shouldn’t always be another £60m player - the entire point of hiring a top coach is to overachieve, develop your own talent and maximise the potential of every player in the squad, like Mancini did with Zabaleta and Kompany.

Signing Bernardo and pursuing Sanchez in the summer of 2017 while already having Sterling and Sane is what chased Sancho out of the club, as the signing of Mahrez did with Diaz; at some point the club has to demand genuine commitment to utilising the talent the academy is producing. You can understand why those within the youth system apparently want a transfer ban - it must be infuriating knowing exactly how good these kids are to see them ignored to accommodate endless big money signings.
 
He is chomping at the bit to play, if he ain’t gonna start the next game after the last performance when is he gonna get the chance and not for the last 10 mins either.we can’t keep saying his time will come because we will still be saying that in 2 years time.

I liked the bit when Joe said he remembered Phil being a ball boy three years and being a genuinely really nice guy.

Hope we can have him and a few more like him and Taylor in the team within a few years. Gives something intangible to the club and reminds me of the pre-takeover days.

Those quotes are great, but worth noting that they're from that new book so they could be quite old. At oldest, December last year when Foden signed. Hopefully they're recent though as the David Silva bit implies it was post Silva's announcement, which was in June. He could just have been talking generally though re Silva. Either way, nice words.
