Do we actually have a transfer strategy?

Our strategy is one of the best in football. The majority of the squad has depth, we have most of our squad tied down for the peak of their career.. bar Leroy!
Any side losing Kompany Silva and maybe Aguero in 3 consecutive seasons is going to feel some pain but our pain this season is being felt due to freak injuries to key personel. Laporte and Leroy happened at the worst possible time. We also have the small injury's to Stones, Zin, Mendy, Ederson, KBD and Rodri at different but important times.

Injury's unfortunately can cost you titles and sometimes you have to just accept that, do your best and make sure that we plan the best we can.

I would go all out if the Der Spegel stuff doesn't stick. Mbappe and Koulibaly and promote Garcia more.

Agreed but there is an argument we were not ruthless enough in the summer with our own players.

Otermendi was disappointing last season maybe we should have moved him on, Gundogan had an exceptional end of season run-in but again his value was high and maybe it would have been a good time to move him on.Sane's situation needed resolving one way or the other, sign or go.....

No sentiment in football if you want to keep winning.

At least spell his name correct and did you actually watch games last season? if you did, you will know what you posted to be bollocks

We do, if anything our transfer strategy is TOO specific. We have a small list of players that fit our team, philosophy, playing style, mentality etc. They need to be ready to be first-teamers, or on the cusp of the first team. They need to be able to track back, play in tight spaces/triangles, have footballing intelligence, have a good ethic etc. Also, we play for every competition rather than dropping out early in the early stages of Carabao/FA Cup, so they need to be open to rotation, but good enough that there's no noticeable drop-off from the first team.

This means we have a small pool to work from, and teams know this. This is why Stones went for £50mil when it's clear his defensive ability isn't top 10 in the league, because we wouldn't even consider better defenders who don't have his attributes. This is why Sane, one of the best wingers in the world somehow became 4th choice, because his defensive input was seen as below-par (not shared by me but I'm not the boss).

You look at the Liverpool team, and they play a 433 with 3 defensive-minded midfielders. The only positions they needed a specific player profile for is CF (A workhorse who can create havoc in the box, allowing their wingers to score more) and a World-Class CB who can play out from the back & provide leadership to what was a shaky back 4. If Allison was a pure shot-stopper of similar ability and not a modern Sweeper Keeper, it wouldn't affect the team that much. This means when they need to buy, they can just focus on getting good players who match the basic profile of the position. This means a wider pool to pick from, which means they can barter from a position of strength.

Otamendi was good last year? Since when?
So good that he did not see the last 11 games of the season, so good that he was replaced by a player whom has had chronic injuries for the past previous 2 seasons.
So good that his manager did not trust him to get us over the line and the same applied to his opo John Stones.

Generally we've got more transfers right than wrong, including plenty of dodged bullets.

In my opinion our one big mistake was baulking at £75m for van Dijk. If we'd signed him we'd be so much better now, and scousers still average. Could have sold Ota two years ago, had vD, Stones and Laporte plus a youngsters getting a chance in cup games, etc after Vinny left. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Hopefully we learnt from it and pay what it takes next time Pep really wants a player.

Maguire was never good enough, I'm glad we didn't waste £80m on him. But next time the right player is available we need to get him, whatever rags, Chelsea or Barca, etc bid if we really need him to improve the team. No getting cold feet for the sake of an extra £10m. We can afford it. Win the league again and the prize money and sponsorship probably cover most of the extra wages anyway.
Re Van Dyke, when he was at Celtic he was paired with loaner Dedryck Boyata, our scouts must have been checking out Boyata on a regular basis, and they did not see the qualities of van Dyke? makes you wonder just how good our scouts are in terms of future 1st team players.

Think it was Denayer rather than Boyata? But yes, fair point.

Your conclusion is based of an assumption.

Not every transfer works out but I am confident we have the best in the business at identifying and procuring our players
