Newcastle (a) post-match thread

It’s not only Laporte but Bernie’s form is a big miss this season . He was the difference maker last season. Need him now to show his class ASAP
I think that's difficult in a pedestrian midfield. You need team mates to play off. Silva is way off. Gundogan is slow. Mahrez passes the buck. It's not down to one player. It's a fall across the park for a variety of reasons.

I think we can expect to recover significantly when Zinchenko, Laporte and Sane return. Add Foden into the meix and that's most of the problems solved. The problem is that Silva's the captain and been a major part of our side for so long, whilst the other players will come back over the course of months. FOden would be an instant pick-up imo. Would help KDB, and Bernardo. I'd also drop Gundogan and play Rodri in there. Rodri is a specialised defensive midfield. That's what we bought him to do. Play him there.

Well we bought new players who were suppsoed to re=charge City but they flopped.

We also have young players who could have the same effect. pep refuses to play them.

Our defending is especially poor.

Where would we be had we brought in Foden for Silva and Garcia for laporte? I reckon we'd be a lot better off, but that is with the benefit of hindsight.
How many players from abroad come into the prem and hit the ground flying? Not many. I think it’s unfair to lay the blame at Rodri and cancelos feet, they will be better with time and next season we will surely see them establish themselves. As for the kids, there is no guarantee at all they would do any better and if anything it could be detrimental to their development.

I think this season is just a culmination of two incredible years and it’s like a perfect storm of mental fatigue, players reaching coming to an end of their careers and also some devastating injuries. Apply that to any team and the outcome would be similar.

We ain’t winning the league and that’s no disgrace when you see what Liverpool are doing. Still loads to play for and hopefully it gives pep the fuel to keep going and push on for the next few years.

I understand the moans and there's no doubt the team's not playing like last season, feel especially bad for Mendy who looked fantastic down that left wing when he first arrived. But I still think City deserved to win today, three or four times in the second half they opened Newcastle up to create clear chances in the box and could easily have come away 3 or 4-1 winners Confident Burnley and the rags will both catch it next week.

I know it’s not all down to one player, it’s a team game after all, but Mendy offered nothing either in defence or attack today , yes he’s had bad injuries since we signed him, but how much time does he need to start being beneficial to the team, struggling to see when or where he’s going to benefit us.

In terms of Mendy specifically I mentioned on here a few weeks back that I've never seen a professional footballer with as poor an understanding of 'weight of pass' as this kid.

He literally leathers every single pass.

Adding to my list of gripes I've also observed over the last few games he's played that for a big muscular unit of a man he's as soft as shit.

I sincerely hope this is just him playing himself back to full fitness and capability.

He has to better than we are seeing? Surely?

so it was just Mendy who was shit was it? Because Mahrez was sublime dewn the wing and Jesus every inch Aguero"s replacement Sterlng exquisite finishing

Perhaps it's not their fault, but when we go to Newcastle with a stretched side and don't feel able to play either player then that tells you they have flopped.

I would play Rodri. City are wide open when teams counter-attack us. Stick Rodri in there, and give him a run. Rodri in for Gundog. Foden in for Silva. We bought Rodri to replace Fernandinho but somehow now think Gundog is better in that deep role? He's never been any good as a defensive-minded player. #

We're hard-hit by injury but I don't understand the choices Pep is making. They seem to leave us with a pne-paced pedestrian midfield which is vulnerable to counter-attack and too slow in possession.

I think Mendy's injuries have taken a major toll on him and his confidence is low. Whether he can recover and develop his game is a unknowable; although plenty have opinions on it.

Point taken OB but I'm really struggling to get my nut round how injuries can make the lad leather every pass he plays?
