Var debate 2019/20

While strange, the linesman put his flag up. He misread things, but just as in any season previously, play does not stop when the flag goes up. Never has. It isn't common for the ref to overrule, but sometimes they've seen something the linesman hasn't.

The IFAB regs in the Laws of the Game may have some PL tweak somewhere else, but (as far as I can tell) say flagging should only be delayed for "very clear goalscoring opportunity". I don't think 40 yards out with defenders in the way would be one, so if the linesman thought it was offside, he should and did put the flag up.

If the players had tried to defend it, it might not have mattered. What the keeper was doing is anybody's guess.

Managers and players where told pre season that the flag would not go up and that VAR would rule if a goal scored.

The flag went up, the players stopped as they have done all their playing careers.

We now have an offside rule that says the flag might go up, it might not, the ref might blow to stop the game, he might not, teams might be given the advantage of playing on, others might not, that could lead to a goal being scored, it wont for those that get stopped and on and on and on...............

Its so fucking ridiculous, its so open to manipulation dependant on who is playing its untrue, its a farce!

I don't get it, if Carroll was offside when he flicked the ball on, it's a free kick to Sheffield isn't it.

Thing is this ofside rule with var be so easy to fix just tell the linesman dont put your flag up unless you see fresh air between players but Riley is the main problem and he can do what the fcuk he wants as long as the history clubs are happy!

Problem is there is little or no punishment either. Lino and refs will be back making mistakes next week or the week after.
You raise a valid point. Refs happy to dish out yellow and red cards for not adhering to the laws of the game should be subject to exactly the same punishments. These would have to be issued from refs from differing European leagues, or an independent body not associated with football

But if the linesman saw a clear offside, he should put his flag up. That he may be wrong is not the problem.

If the linesman hadn't put his flag up, it might have led to a corner or freekick which led to a goal. Then there would be complaints that offside should have been given - but the current system doesn't work like that.

Can’t believe we were so naive to think it would help us. The way they’ve set it up is ingenious and has the smell of Gill and others all over it. Just like FFPR not tackling debt.

Give the cartel clubs the benefit of the doubt with all decisions on the pitch, VAR never overturns. Before VAR it would’ve been too obvious but now they’re using grey areas to fuck us.
