A breakdown of what has gone wrong (and why we’ll be back)

There were plenty of times at United when Bacon Face had a baron league spell. Arsenal, Blackburn and Chelsea spring to mind. However he's looked upon as all conquering. And that was when United had far more to spend than everyone else. The Premier League now has many more financially capable teams, and is more wholly competitive.

As much as it goes against my initial reaction as a fan, I believe the long term thinking employed by the club is always the right thing to do.

I'll continue to enjoy our participation in cup competitions, and still marvel at where we are today. This season is far from over.

So no quick fixes or knee jerk reactions. The clubs revenue is growing and off that will soon come more power in the transfer market. Add some quality purchases, and with the likes of Foden and Garcia coming through I'm sure we will be top dogs again soon.
 
Vital questions not asked at the start of the season.

“what will we do if Laporte gets injured for any length of time”

Not answered.

That one decision to not bring in a top quality CB is the biggest reason of the lot. Whether you like Maguire or not, we pissed about for the sake of a few million and we have left ourselves short.

Having said that, Liverpool’s start has been that good that we would probably still be 7/8 points behind whatever we had done.

the transition when Silva, Aguero and Fernandinho go is a big one. We need to buy very big and very well in Jan or in the summer.

If Pep goes then even more transition and the dippers will dominate for a few seasons.

I dont think 1 off season is a barren spell. If thatd what you meant by mentioning Blackburn and arsenal. Neither team won consecutive titles and United never went more than a season without winning the title until 2005, when Chelsea were at a different level financially. I agree with your point in general but just wanted to point out the inaccuracy.

It's the same reason Liverpool are in the position they're in at the moment. You can still dominate while not spending as much as your competition. Chelsea spent something close to triple what United spent in 2005 and 2006 and it the latter rallied to win back to back titles to force Mourinho's exit from a Chelsea.

Klopp is doing likewise here and has propelled liverpool to their spot without being the biggest spender. The answer is to face this adversity and get back to the top. Guardiola is a better manager than Mourinho was even then. I think he'll turn it around here. But we'll have to wait and see.
 
Lots of good points here, I'd like to add a couple of positive observations...

We came withing a few minutes of what would have been an amazing result against Wolves ( a team playing at 100% of their potential with a ludicrously quick player at the top of his form and confidence).

The lads effort was fantastic, everyone put a shift in and that for me overrides a couple of individual mistakes.

When a team has been as good as we have over the past couple of years, a drop off of a few percent looks like a chasm, I've got faith in the manager and players that they will turn things around. The execs can help by showing some financial power in January if the right player can be obtained, Koulibaly or maybe Umtitti.

I'll get woriied when I see a lack of effort from the players, not seeing that at the moment, just fatigue.
 
Loss of Kompany is the big one for me. Triple blow - lost the leader in the dressing room, far and away the best defensive organiser on the pitch, and one of our best two centre halves. Always going to hurt us. Laporte's injury has obviously compounded it, but it would have been an issue anyway.

2. We’ve lost Kompany and Laporte (for most of the season) who were strong in the air. Rodri is big but he isn’t great in the air. The opposition know we have a weakness and getting a corner isn’t even seen as an opportunity to create a chance these days.

3. our possession stats reflect that we are great at knocking the ball about with 11 players. I missed the sub category about keeping hold of the ball with 10 players against a powerful side. Our possession stats were at the lowest under Pep (on Friday) according to reports.

1) Oh I forgot the last 43 years when we were super successful with our fanatical crowd at Maine Road.... seriously what is your point?

2) Yes, so what’s your plan? Buy big tall players in case the good ones get injured and we can possibly do better at set pieces?

3) Again this is illogical. You were replying to a post highlighting key factors in our failings this season and chipped in with us not retaining the ball. Playing with 10 men is a one-off... so what’s your point?
 
Manchester City are most frequently compared to Wenger's first great Arsenal side because of the sheer quality of the football. Wenger then went on to become what Mourinho called a specialist in failure.

Now where are City in all this. Certainly in transition. Kompany retired. Silva is to follow. However, take comfort in the quality of de Bruyne and Bernardo. I am convinced that but for injury to Laporte, the transition would have been almost seamless.
