Running thread

Well the new running shoes are great. Very comfortable/springy, and after the first couple of kilometers they seemed to mold to my foot shape perfectly.
By the end of the run, they felt like i'd worn them all my life.
The only problem is i managed to add two minutes to my normal time!
I can only assume i was backing off thinking the shoes would somehow do all the work. I did feel i was more in control of my breathing, so maybe i was taking it easy to see how the shoes performed.
Looking forward to Sundays run now.

Park run this morning. Legs still a bit tired from the double park run header on New Years day so feared the worst.

Went fast at the start and then just hung on for the last 3.5 km and came home in 20:33, so moving towards my target of breaking 20 mins. Was delighted with it to be fair but not sure where I can slice off 34 seconds as It was a real struggle.

Nice one mate. I wear brooks but do not rotate trainers besides when I do cross-training work in the gym/running machine etc when I pop a cheap pair on.

Its a personal thing but once I get used to a pair, I prefer to stick with them until its time to throw away.

Thanks for the info. The last thing i don't want to do is cock my body up by not doing the right things.
I wouldn't normally bother, but i'm stepping things up etc.
 
Need a bit of advice.
I've been running off and on for about two years. My work tends to dictate when i can run. I tend to do 5k on average, about twice a week.
Of late, i've hardly done any running. So i'm determined to make much more effort. (every other day)
So far, i didn't feel the need for any special running shoes. I've just been running in a pair of Adidas ZX Flux.
I have been looking at the Nike range of shoes. Not for the badge, more that i don't know what shoes are good. The top end Nike stuff looks ok, but i feel that is more for the dedicated runner.
I'm overweight and 50, so thought something more forgiving rather than fast would be more suitable. My ankles and knee/hips are already showing signs or wear etc.
I've just bought a pair of Nike Air Zoom Vomero 14 Running Shoes in the sales (£72). The reviews seem to point to be a good balance between comfort and speed.
However, while reading the reviews, most people indicated they have several pair of shoes that they rotate.
Is it needed to have several pairs of different shoes and keep rotating?
If so, what would people recommended based on my above needs. Some advice on other brands would be helpful.
Although i would prefer not spending silly money, i can afford to get the right shoes for me etc.
To be honest, you're probably OK with one pair for a few months given your mileage. If you significantly increase your overall weekly distance covered, then it might be an idea to have 2 or 3 pairs on the go.

When it comes to buying shoes, it's a case of 'what works for someone else might not for you.' It's an individual thing since we all have different gait, foot strike, cadence, weight, mileage etc. The usual advice is to go to a specialist, independent running shop and ask for a gait analysis. They will watch you run and try to determine your running style. From there, they can recommend the right shoes that are designed for your pronation etc. I would then try on a range of shoes to find which feel best for you. Popular brands are Asics, Brooks, Altra, Hoka One-One and On (there are others of course). The thing is - don't just go by brand; it has to be the correct MODEL of shoe that is designed for your gait.

I hope that makes sense. Oh, and I would be prepared to spend a lot of money on the right trainers - this could be upward of £100 but it's worth it to avoid injury and improve your fitness.

If you did the double header just the other day then that might be your answer right there! Bit of a rest and in the right mood you should do that. I need to shave 40 seconds off to get sub 20, but for some reason I've slowed right down over the last year (though I joined a gym so may have just 'diversified' my body somewhat).

Absolutely, although there only seems to be two varieties of shoe to match your pronation/gait? Also, I half suspect that the machine you use don't really give you a full answer....great if you're going to be running on treadmills but out there on the road the ground is so uneven (either pavement to ground). I was given a choice on my particular gait (pronated) of around 5 trainers...4 of them just did not fit right (despite me really liking the 'look' of them) but the Brooks pair felt perfect. In fact my first running pair (before these) were Brooks that I picked up in TK Maxx on a whim...never really expected to take up running.
Research the usual suspects then try them on.

Yes all logical that mate and I should be able to go a bit quicker, just tough to see a 30 second drop as even on my first K I only just dip under the magical 4 minutes and have not yet sustained it for my second. Also today was not overly enjoyable either.

Yes its a tough one with the gym. Definitely lost a bit strength while running, as well as fat, but a price I am prepared to pay in the short term.

I am in the Brooks camp. Felt more suited to me than any other straight away.
