Australia Fires

They've had an unprecedentedly dry spring, the driest in 120 years, followed by the hottest summer in history.
Thats not strictly true the summer of 2012–2013, resulted in 123 weather records being broken over a 90-day period, including the hottest day ever recorded for January on record, the hottest summer average on record, and a record seven days in a row when the whole country averaged above 39 °C (102 °F). Single-day temperature records were broken in dozens of towns and cities, as well as single-day rainfall records, and several rivers flooded to new record highs.
I live on Queenslands gold coast and so far we've had quite a cool summer, your right about the Victorian S.E. though, they've had it hot and dry for a long period.

Hottest day ever record in Australia was a few weeks ago though wasn't it? It has been unusually hot.

They've had an unprecedentedly dry spring, the driest in 120 years, followed by the hottest summer in history. That's following on from a drought last year and combined with unusually strong winds from an Antarctic weather system which spread the fires much quicker and has made the wind direction change frequently so they're harder to fight.

The main thing that actually ignites the fires is lightning. Someone mentioned arson and accidental but that's only about 10%
