Hi bluemooners.

Wife came home last night and suggested Boston as a destination for her 40th in November this year. She was set on going to New York but we have already been and although we both loved NYC, she feels that we should maybe try a new place. She's got the idea from someone at work who has a pal that has been and loved it.

I've had a quick look via google and watched a couple of youtube videos on Boston and if I'm being honest, I think that we might struggle to fill 5 days. Neither of us are mad on American history and I think a day or two of hearing about the revolution and walking the freedom trail we might get a little bored. We're also not too interested in walking around Harvard either.

Neither of us are mad on seafood either so lobster sandwiches and Boston clam chowder aren't going to compare to a chip barm from Tony's chippy.

I love sport so obviously the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtic, New England Patriots and New England Revolution will be of interest. I also love beer and Boston does look to have a very vibrant beer scene. It's also the home of the sitcom Cheers so that too would be a fun thing.

Is it a little bit far to go for what might be an average experience or am I doing Boston a huge injustice there and we'd have a great time?

We're pretty simple folk who love to wander about a City, take in a few points of interest but for me the place has to have a really apparent music, sport and social scene where we'll enjoy every evening out.

Any thoughts blues?

Do both maybe. It’s only 4 hours or so on the train?

I live 16 miles from the city centre (or center as they spell)
5 days?
Spend 2 in and around Boston (Salem as someone mentioned is good) and then catch the ferry and spend 2 days in Provincetown on the tip of Cape Cod. You might get to see some whales on the ferry!
If you like this sort of thing there is a new huge casino just opened a few miles north of the city.
Public transport is good so you dont need to hire a car.

There is a website "20 (or 25) things to do for free in Bosoton"
Check it out - the Sam Adams brewery tour is good as is a look on the SS Constitution. There is lots to do and great places to eat and depending on what time of year always sports going on - don't forget to pop in to The Banshee in Dorchester to watch City if the season is on!

I was in Pittsburgh for Thanskgiving and that's a great place to wander around. Sports mad and great bars and restaurants. If you're into art, the Andy Warhol Museum is brilliant. There's also a great zoo, avaiary and botanical garden. In November you might be able to catch the Steelers or the Penguins Ice Hockey team at home. Sadly, the baseball season will be over so you can't get the superb views of the Pittsburgh skyline from behind the home plate at PNC Park. You can also do a river cruise if the weather is OK and there's spectacular views from the southside cliffs via the two inclined railways. If you fancy hiring a car, the Flight 93 memorial and the famous house Fallingwater designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, are 90 minutes drive away. There's direct flights from Heathrow, which makes it easy and cheap to get to. If ou're there while City are playing, the Steel Cityzens will welcome you.

If you've not been to Washington, that's also brilliant.

We met a couple from pittsburgh whilst on honeymoon in Venice 3 years ago and they loved being from there. Like you say, Sports mad and they felt that a trip to pittsburgh would give you a more real feeling for how the average American is and lives as opposed to the view you'd get visiting more popular American cities like NYC for example.

Food for thought, cheers.
