There's a good documentary on Botham on Youtube. We all remember Headingley, but Botham went through terribly out-of-form periods too. I had forgotten that. My view is that Stokes, while not being at quite the summit that Botham could get to, is more consistent. At this point, at least.

Botham wasn't just a great cricketer. He is an admirable man. Even his flaws make him more human.
 
Stokes is an unbelievable player, but he wouldn't get in the team if he couldn't bat. He barely bowls anymore. Having strong characters in a team is important, but you can't get in the team just being a good fielder and a leader.
I agree generally with your comments, but would point out that Both was a fantastic fielder. Mainly close to the wicket where he could catch balls after they had passed him. But, if you ever saw one of his occasional stints in the outfield, you would have witnessed an amazing throw, fast flat and right by the stumps.
