This is about opening up housing outside the m25 to London commuters. Tgv in France didn't bring prosperity from paris to Marseille, it brought people from Lyon and Marseille to Paris. As a nation I feel we are missing the point of the Internet by increasing daily commuting opportunities :-(

Massive waste of money for me and
would imagine the final cost will be north of £200 billion.
Essentially, the whole project has been afforded government bonded 'too big to fail' status. It's an open cheque book to all.
And also now, it seems, the 'northern powerhouse' motivation no longer features as highly as was once suggested. Phase II of the project is likely to be put on hold or else downgraded to a level of sophistication that might not have been unfamiliar to Robert Stephenson.

Newly elected Tory MPs from northern constituencies are now seeing HS2 for the resource-hungry southern vanity project that it always really was.

yep. The main ones to benefit from this will be people who work in London and can commute and the companies they work for. whilst at the same time pushing up prices for everyone else.

massive waste of money that should have been spent improving the appalling transport links we have now.

Also more people are working from home now. So surely in 30 years time travelling to work will be redundant for many

which is why they can charge so much. same reason why petrol and food at motorway services is so expensive - the purchaser isn't paying in the end. As long as there are expenses nothing will change.
