UEFA want £275m from clubs to delay Euro 2020 - report

Well they don't really generate any money.

All the money they generate is TV and sponsor revenue for the CL and Europa...but it's not their money, it's for the clubs.

So every year they pay out roughly 90% of their income and then they make a ton off the Euro tournaments which then funds them for the next 4 years.
I get that and I'm not privy to the numbers involved but I imagine that is quite a 10% in turnover and you just continuously sign up new Noodle sponsors and the like to increase the 10% without necessarily having to increase overhead etc.

Even if you ran at break even for the years without a Euros and make it rain every 4th year (this year being a large anomalie) would have an eye-watering some of money at the end surely?

Or am I over simplifying things as usual?

They need the money:

That's incredible when you see how big UEFA revenues are. Given that they rely totally on broadcasters and sponsorship they must be facing meltdown over the coronavirus crisis. The other concern must be that consumers will not flock back to football like they did after two world wars. There is so much competition for people's leisure time these days that football will have to work hard to win some fans back, especially the plastic ones.

Aha, can we see some good coming out of Covid-19?

The 3 years were all years where there wasn't a Euro tournament, which is where their big revenues come from. In 2016, they pulled in €1.9bn from the Euro's alone, on top of the €2.6bn from the club competitions. Of that €1.9bn they paid out just over €1bn, leaving them with €850m. That offset a loss of nearly €750m in the non-Euro's side.

The Euro's are the fat that keeps them going for the next 3 years.

Most organisations riddled with corruption are average to poor performers... when those tasked with running an organisation are fixated with lining their own pockets the primary business suffers. take a look at FIFA's finances - they have the World cup bounty every 4 years and should have money to burn but actually their finances are not as healthy as they should be...

The danger here is that the richest clubs, which includes most of the old G-14, will promise to provide the money but with strings attached.

im sure you are correct but many of the G14 clubs have owners whose primary businesses are going to be under huge pressure - Fiat for example focus production and sales in the North of Italy ! As mentioned by many Real and Barca historically will have fully expected the state to bale them out but I can’t see that happening. And as for the Glaziers - I can see their empire falling over - it must already be under huge pressure.
