Clubs furloughing staff

And aren’t most "ordinary" workers under a written contract?
Isn’t that legally binding too?

Yes.

The key difference is in the power and very real asset value that players have. When a pay cut is enforced on “ordinary” workers, their only alternative is often even more unpalatable.........unemployment. If they refuse to accept the pay cut and use the breach of contract to leave, the chances are that their employer isn’t going to lose too much sleep over it.

Very different with a player. If a top player leaves, legitimately citing a breach of contract by his club, then the club will lose a hugely valuable asset for nothing - quite apart from losing a key member of their squad.

So there is no way that clubs can or will enforce a pay cut on players. It has to be voluntary.

The amount of money pouring into premier league clubs every year and they cant sustain a few months wages for their staff instead the government and tax payer has to take the hit?
If a player gets paid £100K a week he pays £2.4M a year to the chancellor. If he takes a 30% pay cut, the chancellor gets £1.7M a year. The difference pays the maximum furlough ‘wage’ to over 20 people for a full year.

Whilst this may be true, how many people at the football club do you think will be able to continue to be paid using the 1.5 million extra that will stay in the club coffers thanks to this player taking a cut?
