Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

I’ve not seen the news, just scanned this thread, but if UEFA have said all leagues must be finished by August 3rd, I’d say that’s them preparing the ground for ruling that all leagues from last season are voided. Surely there has to be consistency across them all. No way is there enough time. This is going to last a lot longer.

Get ready for it when the time is right: “You nearly won the league”.

Here's a rather dour take:

There will be few, if any, professional sporting events held in front of groups of fans until 2021 -- and maybe longer -- in many nations in most sports.

Sport will not return to normal until a vaccine is available and a substantial portion of the world is vaccinated.

If sports leagues try to restart before this, a COVID flare-up traced to just ONE event will recycle the shutdown period.

Not only IMO will the 19-20 season be cancelled, but I believe the 20-21 season will be incomplete if not cancelled.

I don't want this to happen since it benefits Liverpool, but the league should be cancelling the 20-21 season and finishing the stub of the 19-20 season in 20-21 when and if matches can be played.

What’s your source for that?

Oh, no source -- just my own take.

I'm guessing any congregation -- at casinos, concerts, sporting events, airports, railway stations, theme parks, etc. -- can't really happen again until there's a vaccine and it's broadly distributed.

Whether there are legal restrictions or it's just a natural fear-based response by average individuals, I just don't see how humans will allow Petri dishes to re-form unless they're convinced that they and their families are basically safe from the virus.

Locally, small groups/clusters can re-form. A restaurant with a limit on guests and tables six feet apart. People will be willing to interact with others who have been tested and are negative before a vaccine, so they'll go out with friends.

Schools I'm not so sure about -- there will be immense pressure to re-open in the fall given the relative lack of death risk among the young, but I'd guess it's touch-and-go at least here in the USA.

It's a very extreme perspective, I recognize -- I'm not at all sure I am right.

Old Moores Almanac

The way it looks at the moment, is if you allow 3 months from the date of the lockdown. Then allow this season to continue to its finish. That would bring the restart to about the end of June. This would leave all of July to finish the season., providing that the players are ready for the restart. If the players aren't ready then you will be looking at early August, for the restart.

Honestly, I think the writing is on the wall for this season now and the penny is dropping across the board.
