Scariest away day following City

In the late 80s i had joined the army and had returned from basic training, my mate phoned our house (no mobiles in them days lol) and said he had a spare ticket for the derby at old Trafford do i fancy it. In my haste i quickly agreed to meet him outside the Man U supports shop, got there and met him and it then dawned on me that the ticket was in the old stretford end. To be in the middle of them t**ts and watch them score first was a nightmare, but to make it worse we scored a few mins later and i had to keep quite and no celebrate and all i could see was the city fans behind the goal at the far end going mental

That had to be the Brightwell rocket day 1-1.

Does anybody remember you could just buy a platform ticket at Victoria n Piccadilly stations, the rest was down too being on your toes and avoiding the ticket inspector, never used to see as many train spotters getting on one train.

Yes, 2p they were, used to do it from Stockport, went all over the UK for about 40p during the mid/late 70s. Dodging the Hectors was a fine art.

Never really had much trouble but the only time I felt really intimidated was at Sheff United on News Years Day (3-1 win I think, maybe 2001). We arrived at the ground pretty early, asked an old lady where we could get a drink as visiting supporters. She basically told us to fuck off - the BBC were out in force today and we weren’t welcome. Blimey. Went in a pub behind the visitor stand, half an hour later the police came in and said Sheffield had been looking forward to this game and we were in the pub at our own risk and they weren’t able to protect us. Never change, SYP!

Needless to say half an hour later and a few of their big guys came in looking all threatening but the pub was packed with clues by that point. Not sure if it was that or the fact Ricky Hatton was in the pub but they fucked off anyway.

There were a few running battles after the game but we managed to avoid it.

The only other time anything happened was when we went to Everton away for a testimonial Gary Abblett I think? About ‘98. After the game a group of about 20 fat twats chased me and my mate pretty much all the way back to Lime St.

They were FAT twats but managed to keep up with you ?
What are you saying-)

Bringing back plenty of memories, mine for the record as follows - Luton away League Cup Owen scored, was at the rear of the special walking back to station and jumped on ended up in hospital all night, others there had been shot at with air guns at the station. Needless to sayI had a wry smile when Millwall invaded them.
Full Members cup was bedlam after in car park as already mentioned, saw lots of coaches smashed up, 15 of us in the back of a Transit with Chelsea banging on the doors, we even picked up a lad who had been chased and dropped him at the end of Princess Parkway.
Boro in League Cup semi which we lost 1-0 was bad in town centre walking back to station. Also the next away game after Colin Bell made injury comeback v Newcastle, we were away at Boro, Gary Owen again May have got winner. - they came in our end with 10 to go and a battle ensued.
Who remembers West Ham away in League cup midweek, after 0-0 at ours, City battered ICF outside after on Lloyd Street, we had an awful walk to ground from the special before the game as they were all waiting and they crossed the road and split into us, never seen so many blues walk quickly. To add injury to insult we won 2-1, Tony Cunningham, and perhaps Steve Kinsey with the goals.
Thankfully we were kept in and given the biggest escort back to the railway station. I remember one cockney in a suit legging it onto the platform to have it with us, he was arrested !
Forest away in another think FACup replay or rearranged game after a postponement was dicey after getting into the coach park but a City eventually ran them.
Yes, Leeds had its moments, remembered one Leeds fan caught by blues next to coaches - was nt a real hooligan but just trying to act it, got a slap anyway
Hibernian pre season which was 0-0 thanks mainly to Alex Williams got a bit nasty towards the end as they started chucking bottles into our section, l beat a hasty retreat !
Anybody go Blackburn away in pre season for was it texaco trophy after we lost away at Blackpool on the Saturday 1-0 ? I went on early service train and they were waiting in bus station outside railway station. There was a special that night too, about 300 on it came with an escort, the way back to station was bedlam scrapping everywhere, if you had nt got a special ticket they kept you in station, and police sent for a train from Bolton for the ones left about 100, I remember leaving about 11.30, and after 100 yard you go across a bridge we were bricked big time with police telling us to get down, who would have believed it.
Wimbledon away first game of season when we drew 2-2 was dodgy outside as Chelsea turned up after they caused big trouble at Arsenal earlier in day.
Brentford way in FA Cup, again Chelsea reportedly outside after the game, bit of handbags from memory.
Went Millwall when Adcock scored, mad outside but police did their job.
Blackpool away in the Cup was a fun day dodging bricks thrown by them, and of course who can forget the Good Friday at Oldham when it was 90 mins of scrapping in their end plus the famous ladder up to the posh seats used by invading blues !
