Coronavirus: Football Discussion Thread

just putting liverpool aside for the moment why are the FA so desperate for this to be completed

The season is unfinished. That leaves massive logistical problems re European qualification, promotion and relegation. It also means that football is likely to breach numerous contractual arrangements which could lead to losses in broadcasting and commercial revenue at a time when match-day revenue will likely vanish for a season. It is a crisis within a crisis.

Even if they restart the Premier League the BBC reports they the PL will lose £340m which will be deducted from payments to the clubs.

I don't believe that Sheikh Mansour finances City any more, but that avenue doesn't look too rosy either. The Gulf nations are in crisis too with Saudi Arabia hiking VAT as it struggles with plunging oil revenues.

I agree that social distancing by the likes of Pep & Kiddo etc could be practised but is it really worth the risk at this stage ? As we all know, even a young player could be very ill with Covid. Not least the risk of a player unknowingly picking it up & taking the virus home. Surely we should be further down the line than 1st June before training re-starts. The idea of re-starting so soon all seems a bit rushed to me and I honestly can't see it happening before we really have a lid on it.
im not sure what stage we are at ive lost track, the last i heard was clubs do not want neutral venues so the FA were going to ask government for home and away games,if thats where we are at then im pretty sure they are not going to grant that, that pretty much puts it to bed IMO, as it stands they have around 11 weeks from now to complete, they cant push back next season because of the Euro's,i really cant see it happening, and thats without the R rate climbing or 2nd wave which probably will happen and a player revolt

I’m playing devil’s advocate, I don’t want it to resume and most importantly I don’t think the players do. But if City were in the scousers’ shoes and we were on the verge of our first title in 30 years then I’d most probably be baying for it to restart

You are not wrong , many City fans would be the same even tho they wouldn't admit it.
Its human nature or rather football fan nature.
And on the flip side you can bet that utd fans would praying that the season would be null and void.
Interesting Liverpool fans prob wouldn't be at that time, , they were genuinely pleased about the aguero moment our rivalry with them came much later

Love how you post it keeps the forum going keep it up.

Danger to those under the age of 45 is minimal. It’s a very selective disease.

So we open football stadia, allow those under 45 in to watch the games and the effect is that in the first month only 200 people under 45 contract the virus, 190 recover well, 4 eventually make recovery, 4 are invalids forever and 4 are killed. . Is that ok in your world?
Then consider the families that the not quite impervious under 45’s take the virus home to - and say another 50 or so over 45’s die, a couple of children too (it can actually kill at any age) another 200 people are hospitalised and half a dozen medical staff contract the virus, a couple more die.
Is it still ok in your world?

The fact of the matter is that deaths are actually increasing in some areas and Salford, which is where 2 of my kids live, is one example.
It doesn’t take that many idiots thinking that they're Impervious to it for us to see the numbers of those affected and those dying horribly rising suddenly.

As another example; in Korea (where the government took quick and effective action, so they got right on top of it), they recently opened some nightclubs. Attendees had to give their names, phone numbers & addresses upon entry so that the authorities could act promptly if a new outbreak arose.
An outbreak did arise and it was found that one bloke with no symptoms (a shedder) had infected 85 other people in the space of 2 hours in one nightclub.
Now Korea have mass testing and squads of trace and test specialists who quickly search out those at risk of having been in proximity to someone infected, so they can act effectively to eliminate new outbreaks.
We have a bumbling shambolic government so we have none of that, zilch, nada, zip, nowt - so every new outbreak here spreads like wildfire and kills many.
Even those not killed can take many months to recover, some will never fully recover because their lungs are so badly scarred that they’re invalids dependent on care for the rest of their miserable lives.

If you think about it fully, I think you’ll agree that you getting together with your mates to watch 22 blokes hoof a bladder up and down a pasture isn’t on, even if it means the loss of just one life.
If it kicks off and someone special to you gets affected I’m sure you’ll be furious at the uncaring idiots who called for its resumption.

thank you Marvin,,its a can of worms mate, even without completing this season the revenue from next season will be a token on what they normally receive, lets face it and its going to happen a lot of clubs will go to the wall over the next 12 months, we could be looking at a two table premiership when things get back to normal and the lower divisions at semi profesional level

You know full well that we can't have full stadia. So if you want equal conditions throughout a season you are effectively saying no football a year. That will be the end of many clubs. Can't see the government paying players.

course we can when its safe to do so

Wow you’re patronising. I’ve got a better idea- why don’t you think about it fully. If you take your argument to the nth degree life is put on hold til a vaccine arrives which most likely will be years away, deaths from other health issues rise exponentially and society is broke with no means of paying for a healthcare system. Is that ok in your world ?

Tel Aviv blue ;-)

City fans seem obsessed with Liverpool now. Completely negative emotion. City can still win things and although we can't be there, it will still be an achievement by the players who we still have a connection with because the break is temporary.

This thread is depressing. Every time I open it, there's another football fan hating on the game that has given us so much pleasure. Self-harm. Remember the Aguero 93:20 moment, and Yaya's goals at Wembley.

I am told football has shown its greed. Hello. The profit motive has run society ever since the factory owners displaced the land-owners. Football is no more capital and labour than your own employer who will be calling on your services sooner rather than later. Some people claim football doesn't care about health. I am not so sure about this but feel instinctively that the transmission of respiratory viruses takes place in closed settings like call centres, offices, restaurants, clubs, pubs, factories and homes. All places where fans are and where some football players are too.I suspect footballers are more likely to fall ill at home or in socialising than in playing football in the open air.

A significant objection is that when people are dying they do not feel in the mood to watch football. And yet people watch films, and read books and do many things to take their minds off football. It is good to do so.

It's become trendy to bash football just like it was in the 1980s. Seems like it's happening again.
Personally for me it's the first time I've pulled myself out of the football cycle, this is a huge break from the footballing world that we love and I've had time to reflect, digest and retune myself to the real world.

I'll tell you straight I haven't missed football one bit and that is purely because I haven't missed the shit flung at us from every angle and every living media outlet, the constant sportwashing and human rights abuse bollocks that gets tagged with every article about us, it's like I can breath again without inhaling the shite I see day in day out.

Tell me I'm being sensitive, tell me I'm talking shit and tell me I'm being paranoid, I couldn't care less. I've supported this club for nearly 40 years now and I miss the team and the buzz of seeing us play but what outweighs that massively is the Liverpool* wankfest that I've and that we have had to endure for getting on for two years.

Let's not forget that.
