I may be wrong here but think it was a paid for optional extra to have the brother logo on the replica shirts.

I remember buying the 84/85 shirt & I’d to pay £2 more to have Phillips on it!! it was my 1st city shirt with a sponsor on it :)

back in the day a lot of the retros came with no sponsors. A lot of that 89-91 shirts with sponsors on now are when umbro rereleased it about 10 years ago.
I recently bought the home shirt from 87-89 and the away from 88-90 ( purple and white stripes ). Spent a fortune as I wanted them badly as they were my first ever City shirt as a kid. Neither have the sponsor on them. Still look great though
