Can using a mouse damage your index finger?

I prefer to use a mouse for my laptop, which involves repetitive use of my index finger. Of late it has begun to feel very sore if I bend it (the finger, not the mouse).
At first I suspected arthritis, but I am wondering if it is down to overuse of clicking via the mouse. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me? Repetitive strain injury?

It usually the scroll wheel not the trigger that causes the joint in your finger to ache, if you have one of those mice that has a stiff scroll button (Ooeer) invest in one that is more fluid, it makes a hell of a difference.

Starting a thread on here with the word "finger" in the title is gonna get some silly replies...........anyway, why are you putting a mouse up there as well?
