Unions

Fuck yeah!!!

And, much of the whining is more OSHA or Health & Safety legislation rules than anything else. Safety costs money and takes time.

They are also the strength behind airline safety, as regulatory bodies take an increasingly “help business first” stance! Or, would you prefer your pilots be at work for SIXTEEN HOURS WITHOUT A BREAK?

Fatigue creates the same physiological changes as alcohol consumption. No alcohol within 8 hrs, but then they can work you until you are “legally drunk” on fatigue?!

Proud union member and ex-union chairman of over 2,000 pilots!

P.S. You like weekends and holidays off? Unions!
You like PAID vacations? Unions!
You like workplace safety? Unions!
You like breaks during your working day? Unions!
Maternity leave? Unions!

And on and on and on!

What you take for granted was hard fought AND WON, on your behalf by union members of the past...many of whom were beaten and killed while trying to get those things!

For those of you complaining about unions, I would politely suggest a trip down the memory lane that was workhouses, child labor, factory housing, low pay and the like. In fact, I’m sure you can find it in many first world countries across the globe. Oh wait, no you can’t! But, if you’d like the experience, I’m sure we can find you some backwater location across the globe that will fit your bill!

It’s funny. People take so much for granted and have so little realization of how many people LITERALLY died to get it for them. Then, they moan about a loafer!

The loafer IS NOT THE UNION, and there are plenty of ways to fix him or her. Don’t ever think that throwing the baby out with the bath water will fix your concerns, because you LITERALLY have no idea how good you’ve got it now that others have sacrificed all yo get it for you!

Who knew there were so many extreme capitalists on here?!

Font know if you can get the whole thing over there, but...

or maybe take a look at “The Lean Years” about the plight of American workers.

I could have sworn that was a two gun Bob post till I got to the end

Socialists and Scousers go together like jealousy and bitterness.

You are from the most socialist city in the north wests history.

The mechanics institute is the spiritual home of Unions and the Co-Operative movements

And one that is openly proud of that fact.

Scouser were the last major city to stop voting in tories and the council mainly liberal controlled until the late 90s

I remember watching a documentary about industrial strife in the 60’s and 70’s, and Peter Shore, of all people, appearing as a talking head, acknowledged (or words to the effect of) without any ostensible prompting, that the Unions fucking blew it.

I wonder how different the country would look today if they’d been more restrained, considered and strategic when they were at their strongest (as well as their most irresponsible).

They overplayed their...errr...collective hand and I believe the country is a poorer place to live today as a consequence. Almost certainly Thatcher would have been a milk-snatching footnote in history if it wasn’t for their high-octane charged recalcitrance in the mid-70’s.

They fucked themselves, basically.

If it's baked in works time surely it's only fair to offload in their time too?

No one goes toilets on breaks where I work, it's the only time they are empty.

Spend a penny, earn a pound

If it wasn't for the union our company would absolutely shit on us plebs, luckily the union holds a lot of sway and power where I work

My mum was a union rep,you don't cross a Yorkshire woman with a clipboard

My Father was shop steward at GEC in openshaw when they were out on strike in the late 80s, we lived off strike pay and me mams wages for moths, but the community and comaradeship from other strikers and other workers from the area looking after each other in times of need is something sadly lost now.

You would get the local bakery shop bringing up butties and cups of tea to the strikers, and when we finished school would go up the picket line to see me dad.

Been on picket lines myself with work

This entire thread is one big WUM and I joined in and caught something.

I’m not from Manchester though, brought up in the High Peak.

Can’t be doing with city dweller scum.

Amazingly ignorant mostly red topped tabloid led Thatcherite views expressed by all the usual suspects.

If any of you just stopped to think for one minute - in many cases union recognition is welcomed by employers - I have had experience of this myself. In large organisations things like T&C's, job losses or wages and rewards are better negotiated with a single entity - its simply not possible to set up a system which is done on an individual basis that can be done quickly and efficiently. When done individually it invariably leads to accusations of nepotism and results in a disgruntled workforce that is not productive as it could be and lots of employee churn.

In fact when I have been involved with a union the single biggest complaint from members is that the union reps are "in the pockets" of the business and don't get them the lazy well paid gig they want.

Your first sentence gives you away, but let’s move on.

You are describing monoliths where management is frequently mediocre and internal equity is more important than performance. Of course it’s easier to follow the manual than differentiate on the basis of contribution. Result? Plodders are rewarded much the same as top performers.

Meanwhile, in fast-moving environments it’s not a recognised model. Fail to recognise your best and most marketable people and you lose them.

You sound like someone with pretty narrow sectoral experience.
