Makes you wonder if signing players like this are an indication as to whether Pep is staying or going. The talk of both possibilities have ceased over the past few months and it would be interesting to see what comes out of the club over the next few months. Koulibaly could be a signing to ensure we get over the line one final time, or investing that much could also indicate that Guardiola is staying beyond his current contract.

Obviously, there’s no answer to this as of yet and it could be not even related, but it’s interesting signing this sort of player which is completely away from the model we’ve had over the past 5-7 years.

Guardiola regularly speaks about the future and hopefully that is with us. Everything is in place already for him, he could DEFINITELY do what no one since Ferguson has ever done and give surgery to a squad and be successful with another City team, but it seems whether he has the will and desire and/or family issues or matters allow him to commit further than 2021.

Ahsan seems to be friends with people like Lu Martin, Pol Ballus and Marti Perarnau - all friends of Pep's and very in with the catalans at the club. He seems to be pretty well informed all round, don't think he's got a direct line to Khaldoon but he clearly knows a few people around the club.

Jack Gaughan writes for the Mail but has a pretty good record on getting the club briefings and the official line on things.

To be honest everyone is saying the same thing about Koulibaly - he wants to come and the club want him - so its a pretty safe bet.

IF we win our appeal. Can’t imagine at his age he fancies two years out of the CL. Although if he stays at Napoli he’d be getting at least one season out of it anyway. Fingers crossed

There were other instances like Alexis Sanchez who was also 28-29 at the time we came so so close to signing him.

but yea would love to see Pep reinvent this team. I think it would be an interesting proposition. Especially with the Livarpool challenge. Had we won the league and dominated again this season Pep may have felt his work was done but now there’s a major challenge to win the league again. Chelsea is improving, as are the rags, Arsenal not so much but then you have Leicester, and even Everton with Carlo will improve. I’m sure Spurs with Jose will be much much better next season.

It’s the best league in the world with the best managers in the world and a lot of the best players.

You can't have 22 year olds in every position who might be here 10 years. Especially in the most glaringly deficient position we have proven to have in many seasons consecutively... Getting a known commodity who provides immediate steel for 2-3 years IMO is the way to go right now.

Isn't the hope that Garcia & Harwood-Bellis integrate into the first team the next couple years anyway? Seems like the argument against signing a young midfielder is that it will block Foden, so this argument should work concerning those two. Koulibaly seems like a perfect fit - can step right in, still have (at least) 2 years as a top level player, and as he begins to slow should be right when those two are ready to take off.

Hopefully you're right, my fear is that we've heard this before with Jorginho. Although maybe Sarri being at Chelsea influenced that one in a way we don't have to worry about here.

If we can learn anything from United, and even Arsenal and Chelsea these last few years, is that the CL isn't the be all and end all. Especially for an overseas player with the chance to play in the PL at a club which would still be likely competing for 3 other trophies.
