Southampton (A) Post-Match Thread

Can’t fault the effort tonight in all honesty
Just one of those games which happen now and again. We battered their defence and created enough to win it handsomely.
Unfortunately our finishing wasn’t up to standard but credit to Southampton for some proper defending.
Some of our build up work was v good but you cannot afford to give goals away like we did.
Zinchenko just isn’t good enough at LB and urgent replacement is needed.
Onwards and upwards.

It was a little bit of a resume of this season - one mistake and they punished us. After, we created a lot. 10 players behind the ball and we conceded few chances. We played a really good performance but it was not enough.

Next season will be next season. Try to score more goals, avoid conceding chances we have. The control is there, The way we play is there. (We must) Try to increase these kind of things

Oleksandr Zinchenko: "I do apologise to all team and #ManCity fans. This kind of mistakes is not acceptable." [via IG: zinchenko_96

"We use our keeper for build-up, to play, play better. Ederson gives us a lot and, the mistake was the mistake but we didn't lose for that reason. It happened many times this season, the amount of chances that we have, we have to try to score

Bernardo Silva: "We didn't play bad. We started well, the second half especially we put a lot of pressure but couldn't score, we couldn't finish our chances. We need to improve the mistakes we made today, the little mistakes that cost us a goal

"I honestly think we played well today. We created plenty of chances but couldn't score. Little mistakes cost us. Overall I think 88 minutes of the 90 were spent on the Southampton half of the pitch. Congratulations to them.

these Laporte panic slashes at the ball when he misses it completely are strange. Seem to remember similar mistake against spurs CL quarter final that led to a goal.
There were a couple of slices resulting from over the shoulder dropping high balls. It's rustiness. This is like pre-season without the relaxation leading up to it.

Fuck me the arrogance of you.

We have problems defensively and we have problems finishing chances when Agüero is out (and even sometimes when he's fit).

You want analysis?

City have created 85.27 expected goals (xG) this season, 4 above our actual numbers of goals scored.
Liverpool have created 66.16 xG, 6 below the actual number.

City's defensive xG is 34.05, almost dead on the 34 goals conceded.
Liverpools defensive xG is 32.78 (Just over 1 goal less than City), but they have only conceded 25.

These changes lead to City's expected points being 8.37 higher than our real tally.
While Liverpool's expected points are 22.91 lower than reality.

An analysis of the things that have cost us this season amount to:
- Defensive frailties
- Missing chances
- Injuries
- Misfortune

Our defensive numbers are actually similar to Liverpool, while we are creating so many more opportunities than any other team. We should be leading.
There is obviously an argument about xG and how, especially defensively, it favours teams who get lot's of men behind the ball, as xG doesn't account for the number of players goal side of the ball. Teams like Burnley often over perform in xG. This could explain Liverpool's insane stats, but it doesn't completely. Stats like Liverpool's (exceeding xG by a ridiculous margin) is unsustainable as it relies on players to finish many difficult chances and rarely or never miss very good chances. Some of it has to be put down to fortune.

However, it highlights that creatively we are the best team in the Premier League by a long way and our sheer number of goals is not solely or even mainly the work of our forwards but the invention of our midfield. Defensively, our team is far more exposed than teams who keep numbers behind the ball and will often concede around the xG. We need to help lower our defensive xG while trying to actually meet our own attacking xG or even exceed it next season. Lowering our defensive xG will come from hopefully quality reinforcements at centre-back and possibly left-back while Foden / Bernardo should be able to cover the advancing LB much more efficiently than David Silva.

All fair and good post but leagues over if we win games cup and champs league or one of them that’s a double and a cracking season. Next season will depend on who we recruit in the summer we need 3 top players and we will be competing for everything again.

Our work rate was monumental. We had more clear cut chances than usual, but like every other team, we're rusty.

We battered them but couldn't score, after gifting them a goal. These things happen on bad days for us. We were rotating, and it was a nothing game. As someone said earlier, we have bigger fish to fry. Very frustrating to watch, but, on another day, we would normally have buried them - especially if it had mattered.

Simply not having "one of those days" or "bad day at the office" excuses anymore
9 PL defeats is niether
Each to their own. I choose not to spend my evening pissed off about losing a match that we largely dominated against a likeable, hardworking side.
