Diego Maradona

He was obviously brilliant, but to say he won the WC single handidly with Argentina, and the same with his Napoli successes is going over the top.

If the handball goal had been spotted and disallowed, would he have gone on to score the second in exactly the manner in which he did? He was likely massively emboldened by getting away with the first, must have felt he could do anything.
Having said that, he was always likely to score one way or another...

He did come from real grinding poverty and was the main breadwinner at 15. In Spain and Italy he got vicious treatment from cloggers intent on harm. When Napoli went to Atalanta the home fans held a sign up saying 'welcome to Italy' as if people not from the rich Northern cities were a different nation to those of the poor South.

The QF in 86 the England players were trying to do him. The game encapsulated Maradona his brilliance and his cunning. Still funny seeing him stroll past Reidy. A few years later in a derby as Family Man did the same to him a wag shouted 'go on Reid, use your pace!'

The teammates he played with were certainly not the world class stars who litter the game now. He was a shit but he got treated shit too.

For those who have seen, what was the realistic chance of England in 1986 WC had they beaten Argentina?

Live news reporting of his funeral. Even on his way to be laid on state he starts fights with police.

We’d probably have beaten Belgium in the semis, and lost to Germany in the final.
Beat them 3-0 in a friendly there the year before in a warm up tournament. I think you'd be right.
