From Francis, Tueart and Hutchison to Chris Jones, Bodak and Terry Park 81-83

What was the story with Bond jacking ? Was that due to his extra curricular activities up at that hotel in Disley ?
(now a boarding school, pass it all the time)

Whatever deficiencies there were in that squad, we should never have been relegated in 1982/83. Not just because of where we were in the league with just over a third of the season left, but also because that group of players should simply have never been relegated.

Ball is often touted as our worst manager, but for me, John Benson wins hands down; and had we stayed up in 1983, things could have taken a different turn in the years that followed it; although I’m certainly not complaining now!
Bang on about Benson, he was a hapless relegation specialist throughout his career.
He followed Bond to Burnley as assistant after us, again took over as caretaker when his mate got the bullet and again got them relegated. He already has a previous relegation with Bournemouth on his CV.
Swales being an utter cheapskate instead of replacing Bond with someone vaguely competent but more expensive did for us

This is where it all started to go badly wrong (82/3). Won first three games, think we were second, early December after beating Arsenal 2-1. Then the arse dropped from under us. Swales has a lot to answer for as we all know, but this is the point in time that reality started to dawn for a 17 year old lifelong Blue. Bad, bad days.

0-0. Paul Stewart hit the bar near the end too.
I was at that one. First time I’d heard “we never win at home and we never win away” sing repeatedly. I can still see the Stewart chance. It was right in front of the City fans (I was in the seats) and it hung in the air for ages yet was still below us. We outplayed them that day.

I went to most home games in that era with my Dad. I was 11-13 and City daft. I was young and naive but after the cup final defeat I genuinely expected us to win the league in 81-82.

This was the era that the financial stupidity of the previous few years really came home to roost. Didn't we spend hundreds of thousands on a new Main Stand roof to house corporate boxes (on that structure which hung off it) but ran out of money and never built the boxes, thereby renderering the new roof a waste of time and money?
That roof was beautiful though, totally incongruous but at the same time somehow an integral part of what made Maine Road such a special place

It was right in front of us. Unlike you, I was stood on the terrace below you, man of the people that I am.

We did outplay them, but it was a pretty dire game iirc, as so many of them were back then.

Yes absolutely. I seem to remember Swales grandly saying we were following the Liverpool model of keeping the manager job in house!!! Might as well have given it to the tea lady........or was she already playing right midfield?
