Australia & Novak Djokovic case

Does beg the question why Tennis Australia were granting a medical exemption that didn’t comply with the entry requirements for the country. Doesn’t matter if they wanted him to play, they had to align with that surely.

I have very little sympathy for him and as much as it is slightly amusing it’s now blown up even more, how on earth it ended up in this situation is a screw up that’s down to more than just him.

Djokovic denied entry.

It was already quite a big issue that he was given medical exemption to play, when the Australian government and government of Victoria have been pretty adamant about the need for vaccination. Players had to be fully vaccinated in order for the tournament to take place. Many Australians have still had a lot of restrictions, unable to see family etc...so they were disgusted that he was given exemption.

Well apparently there is now issue with his visa paperwork, he's flew all the way to Australia and his paperwork doesn't check out. Apparently the government wanted to see the medical reason that meant he couldn't be vaccinated so I assume the issue pertains to him not being able to provide that medical reason.

It was a pretty big tournament as well, the one where he was suppose to pass Federer and Nadal for the most grand slams. From the sounds of it, he would have been booed at every match though.

He's filing an injunction, so it's probably not the end of the story just yet.

Snippet from the article as to why the Aussies were fuming that he was allowed to play:

Australia is seeing tens of thousands of Covid-19 cases for the first time after enduring some of the world's strictest restrictions. More than 90% of Australia's over-16 population is fully vaccinated, but some people still cannot travel interstate or globally because of current measures.
