Cars you have had…

Back in the late 80's my Morris 1100 blow up lol I didnt have much money to replace it.
I went to a garage in Cheshire somewhere looking for a cheap car. The bloke said he had a 5 year old Lancia Beta round the back. It was at the time of the rust scandal, the crappy cheap steel.
I checked where the reported rust problems where and it was spotless. I offer him £150 he said yep.

So I bought a top of the range low mileage 5 year old Lancia Beta.

It went like a rocket, beautiful interior, great engine. Kept it for years and never had a problem with it.

It's my second most favourite car I have own behind my triumph spitfire
I had a spiftfire and I loved it , by coincidence I sold it for a Lancia Beta Coupe.
Great drive but a rust bucket, I liked the idea of electric windows but they always stopped halfway up!

Its a shame Fiat seem to have gone off the boil these days. Had both an Uno and a couple of Punto's over the years and all were great little cars, yet they never got much love from the motoring press.

Yeah - they have become a pastiche of themselves just retailing various versions on the 500. If you want a bigger/better car they still make them but put an Alfa badge or a Lancia one ( not sold in the UK ) same as how VAG uses different brands to represent it in different areas - sporty/luxury/peoples car/cars for the cost conscious.

Then again it costs so much to develop a car you have to get the most out of any platform you develop by reusing it a lot.

The new Toyota Aygo Cross came out recently. The old Aygo is dead as is the C1 and 1008 - Toyota bought the whole manufacturing facility in the Czech Republic and PSA said thats them leaving the City Car bracket as they think with the rise of the EV cities will not be places which welcome petrol cars and they see no future in the small car market. Question for me would be is the person who can afford £10k for a C1 in the market for a £35k EV? I mean VW still market the UP! but have withdrawn the UP! E from sale and that was an EV

Yep it is Toyota, anyhow I always get that look when I get a French car. The most reliable cars I've had ? The French ones.

These days though everything seems to be shared across car companies.

Lots of us Blues love French and Italian "tat" it seems - we sensibly let the gullible pay through the nose for German stuff and prosper by being able to buy our stuff at a sensible used price

I had a fiat uno once, I spent more time pushing the car than I did driving it, after that it was VW all the way for me

"Hondas are the most reliable car out there"

Fucking bullshit
Over around 40 years I must have had around 15-20 Hondas, motorbikes & cars ranging in price from around £400 to £1200 & in that time I have covered hundreds of thousands of miles & hand on heart I have never been let down once, I do all my own servicing & fettling,
I guess I have been lucky?
Over those years I have owned a few French cars & I wont be going near one ever again, I guess I have been unlucky?

Mazda Xedos6 2l v6. Jap import. It sat on a mates drive for a couple of years and I got it for nothing, cost a fortune to get it running and keep it running. All my mates thought I was mad, in all the time I had it I reckon I had about 6 months problem free driving but I loved it, wife made me get rid because of how much it was costing.

Had a Skoda estate one time, fucking hated it and still fucking hate it.

Mrs Ewing and I are Frenchophiles when it comes to cars. I've a Partner (all cars should be this shape!) and she has a 108 souped up growler! My Partner, however, decided in March 2021 to have a quiet smoke on the drive. My most reliable car was a 70's Skoda - built with the remains of T34 WW2 Russian tanks, I think! The disconcerting thing about it was that the next numerical registration was a Rochdale dust cart!

I await a Euro millions jackpot and I will purchase a Citroen Deux Chevaux and a Citroen DS '55 vintage, both in sky blue and white livery.
