I heard a very loud noise up above last night while walking the dogs. And guessed it was a fighter jet of some description.

Standard procedure for the RAF escorting a plane that had lost ground communications. The one you saw was flying around in circles, the one I saw, as two of them escorted the plane from Newcastle, followed the plane to Manchester airport and when the plane it was escorting landed, it put on a full turn and burn display. Black smoke and lots of noise. I liked seeing it. The sound of freedom, some would say.
