Remembering Joe Mercer One Of Our Greatest Managers.

A wonderful man and manager. And when he arrived at Maine Road, it was a wonderful time to be a City supporter.

Just fresh from our promotion as Division II champions, during that summer of 1966 it was so exciting to look forward to the next season, our return to the First Division.

And to see 'Genial Joe' representing us, 'Lickle Ol' City', on the BBC's new presentation idea of having a World Cup panel of football experts to analyse every game, well that was so amazing too! Even if he did make us all smile with his pronunciation of Pele's name as 'Pee-lee'!

Eeee, 'appy days.. thanks for everything, 'Uncle Joe'!

@Gary James

Going to school at Wilbraham we used to see him occasionally. Chorlton was the hub of Manchester football management at the time, Joe lived on St Werburghs Rd, Sir Matt and Johnny Hart on Kings Rd.
