The Transfer Window Countdown

Controversially I think Hugo has had a good window. No panic buys but real quality in Reinjders, Cherki and RAN.Nypan a real get too. Glad we didn't overreact to a poor season and sell the future in Rico and Savio.

No one else has bought an RB I'd want, happy to wait for Tino.
His current contract expires in 2028.

Also consider the loan of players like Grealish and Echeverri which don't affect the headline spend.

Right so mixing up your windows to prove what? This is pointless nonsense, we’ve spent money and bought some good players let see how it comes together, over the next few years.

There were 3 sales I missed that totalled 15 million Wright, Walker and Doyle. And as you mentioned 11 loans. I have no idea how much we get for these loans
Ignoring the January stuff my net spend of 118 converted to pounds is 100 minus the 15 gives 85 and maybe all the loans could get us to your figure if 66.

However the January figure of approx 200m pounds cannot be ignored.

But you might be right and there is still some in the kitty

Imho I don’t think the transfer window has been chaotic at all.
I think the expectations of some fans has been chaotic based on the early signings and the fact we (inevitably) didn’t win the title last year.
As stated many times before, let’s not lose sight of where we came from. This leads me to want to see an age demographic of the so called PMA crew aka happy clappers against that of the “shit the bed” brigade.
I’m sure there’s some correlation.

I am not mixing anything up, and neither is it nonsense. The net transfer spends are an easily accessible quantitative indicator of a club's commitment in the transfer market.

To be clear, here is the data again:

Summer 2024: +£115m
January 2025: -£185m
Summer 2025: -£66m

I claimed that City, at the end of the lifespan of the 4 title-winning side have not being aggressive enough in the transfer market, and that is what the data shows. It needs to be benchmarked against Premier League rivals to get a better picture. I know what Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea etc have spent in these windows and we are lagging behind.

This is just one indicator. Man Utd, or Chelsea, can spend huge amounts on poor players, however, if you review City's spending since the takeover it has fallen and changed in nature. We used to buy star players, now we buy young players who still have some way to go. The emergence of the academy has also led to larger transfer outflows.

Wouldn't aggression in the market be indicated solely on spend per window, as sales aren't relevant to how aggressive you're being to bring in new/quality players?

edit: plus our net spend will automatically reduce if our academy is now producing higher sales than previously

In looking for news about Ederson, I came across this in Gaughan's twitter feed which underlines the point about Manchester City's declining transfer activity.

I seem to be one of the few not that excited by our transfers this year. Bar RAN I think activity has been bang average. We’ve gone from shopping in Waitrose to trawling down the middle aisle at Lidl, buying random bits and pieces. If Brighton or Bournemouth had our resources they would assemble some team. Due to the “middle of Lidl” approach the Dippers, Chelsea and Arse have strengthened much more.

You think Reijnders is a bang average signing?

In my opinion he’s going to take a long time to adjust to the pace of the premier league. I don’t think he was the very best we could have signed but he was available. It’s probably harsh to say he’s average as there is a player there but don’t think he will reach anywhere near KDB level.

Viana’s got his work cut out

Sell
Ederson,
Ortega,
Gundo and
Kovacic

Buy
Donnarumma and
A top class right back name unknown

I’d rather this was sorted weeks ago
Of those sells - getting 1 done currently seems optimistic (that would be Ederson of the 4)
The buys - not arsed about Donnar Kebab. The right back has been required all summer - hence I'd be amazed if we get it done in the next 2 days
We started the window like a house on fire, it's now a damp squib.
Before I get a pile of shit - I love my club but have an opinion!!!

Tbf, who should we have gone and splashed a load of money on? Wirtz didn't want to play for us, nobody else who moved this Summer has really blown me away. Probably Eze only signing I'm jealous of. Always a spicy transfer market when the World Cup is on in the Summer might do us good having a war chest next year when Stones, Ake, Gundo, Bernardo etc probably moving on freeing up massive chunks of the wage bill.

Right back is annoying but our homegrown quota situation basically made it chuck 100 million at Livramento or nowt. GK is a worry but I do still think we'll have Donnarumma by Monday.

Wirtz is overrated, Eze is a half- season player, Livramento isn't a good defender.

Donnarumma is the only one on your list that I think would add value at City.

I think he'll turn out to be one of the strongest signings made by any PL club this Summer. His performance vs Wolves was outstanding and he was one of the few City players who did OK vs Spurs.

We need to bring in Donnarumma imo too. If we do that, then we will have brought in two really strong players.

Basically let the rivals catch us up. Very disappointing.

Whilst I won't change anything for the treble, the 4 in a row was a curse that set this club back a few years in my opinion.

Made us lazy, put some in the club to think everything was a given and we were on easy mode and even as fans I think we took for granted how difficult and a privilege it is to win a trophy not just the PL or CL.

I know it's the rags, but it reminds me of the mid 2000s when them lot went 4 years without winning the league, and I think they only won an FA Cup and League cup in that time. They got battered nearly every year in Europe. They signed utter dross after the treble in 99 and Ferguson was getting left behind by Wenger and Mourinho.

I agree but I also think that if we got Livramento (along with Donnarumma) this Summer, we'd have 10/10 window then.
Next Summer we have to go for Livramento, Baleba and a backup CB like Van Hecke. Also pray that Savinho starts scoring goals otherwise we'll need a prolific winger too.
