Why is Blackpool considered a Holiday for people who cant afford holidays abroad?

Went to Lloret last year, fucking horrible place.
£9 a pint & £15 for burger and chips if you went outside the hotel.
Fuck that, only reason to go to most Spanish resorts was the fact they used to be cheap, much nicer resorts elsewhere

We were too poor to go abroad as kids so went Blackpool or Towyn a fair bit. Or you would cram in the car and go to view the illuminations. Good memories.

Not been for years, if I wanted rides I'd rather go Alton Towers. And if I want a beach I drive to Rhos on sea. Funny driving through Towyn and still seeing places that haven't changed since I was a kid 30 odd years ago!

Went there earlier this year and it was looking even more down at heel than the previous times I’d been. Think it’s one of the worst boroughs in the country for social deprivation.

And the same thought occurred to me as it did the OP. Certainly not a cheap place to be if you’ve got to kill time.

I have just spent the day in Blackpool with my daughter and mrs as a treat in the School Holidays. We have had a such a top day, but fuck me was it expensive!

Reckoning up I spent the following
Pleasure Beach tickets £110
Parking £18
Dinner (2 burgers and drinks) £22
bowl of cockles and crab sticks £6
£20 in coins in arcade after the Pleasure Beach (lasted about 15 mins)
The darts game for a teddy on the South peir £5
A ride on the waltzers on the peir £16
5 donuts for the ride home £5

That's £202 for 3 of us in about 10 hours in the place. A Caravan for the night would have been £95.

How do families of 4 afford to spend a week there. It would certainly be cheaper to go to benidorm for a week
I know people who still go for their 2 weeks hols and they pay over a grand.

You don't have to fly to Blackpool - thats why its cheaper (especially in the School Holidays)
And to be fair, apart from the sunshine/warmth, what else does Benidorm have that Blackpool doesn't?

Have just spent four days in a back street hotel in Blackpool, really enjoyed the break, and the Guinness in 'Scruffy Murphys'! .... Have always loved Blackpool, but there's no doubting that it's a bit 'run down' in parts of the town, and it's definitely a lot more expensive there than it used to be

If Blackpool's your idea of a treat mate I'd hate to see the punishment you dish out.:)
Last time I went Blackpool around COVID I had to physically drag a young girl no more than 18 away from a incoming tram, she was obviously of her head on spice or something, did I get a thanks, nope I got abused of her spicehead mates.

Blackpool was our Las Vegas when we were kids. There was literally nowhere else I waould rather have been. Sometimes we got fish and chips or went through the iluminations but it was The Pleasure Beach that we all loved. It still evokes those memories even now when I see the Ghost Train, The Goldmine, Big Dipper etc. You spent your money on the rides and saved your last 30p for the Fun House and then just went in there for the rest of the day. That spinning thing you had to hold on to as it got faster and faster was well dangerous like all the biggest buzzes of the 70s/80s.

Just a distant memory now DD very sad

Blackpool will always hold a special place in my memories. When i was young my parents separated. Leaving my Nan, Aunty and Grandad to help my Dad with the upbringing of 3 kids.

All they could afford was taking us to Cala gran caravan park for 10 nights every year.

We absolutely loved it. The first view of the tower when getting off the coach, Mr peabodys, the piers, the amusements, the sand castle and the pleasure beach were brilliant back then.

I went back for the first time in what felt like decades last year with my GF.

The nostalgia was still there but it has changed massively.

I was only there for 8 hours and spent nigh on £150 with the fuel, going up the tower, lunch and 1 drink in the bar, and a few quid on the pier playing games.

Like others have said. I wouldn't want to spend a week there now!!

You knew you were nearly there when you spotted the windmill :)

Rhyl was a big favourite too. Llandudno is still stunning though and well worth a visit it hasn't lost a lot of its charm.

The disappointing thing about seaside resorts were the rip offs that got worse year on year and the way the towns catered for adults on piss ups forgetting about the children and the magic the promenades had for them.

Had a lovely evening in Pool last night, our lad met us in Scruffys, we went into The Grand for a performance of Blythe Spirit, second row seats for £10 each as he's a member, a drink pre show inside and a pre-ordered one for the interval which were waiting for us.

Finished off with one in the Rose & Crown, then tram home.

Including the day saver transport ticket, worked out about £25-£30 each for the night.

Can’t believe you have to pay to go on the pleasure beach . Was my boys favourite place when they were young.
Yes, they didn’t think about the browsers when they brought that in. As a family day out, a couple of hours was always spent with a walk around the Pleasure Beach, maybe have a go on an odd stall, buy a few tit bits etc. The result is we haven’t been on there for years.
