Regardless of what club it is it’s still absolutely abhorrent that this happened at so many professional clubs for a number of years and that people high up in these clubs knew about it.

No point scoring here as we should know full well the impact this abuse has had on our own players over the years. Thankfully I think this sort of thing is in the past but years ago it was rife and like one poster had said it happened at every club.

Even in Sunday league it was going on in the 80s . I remember playing in a cup that was named after dignitary at the local county football cup and my old man telling me he could believe the cup was still named after him as everyone knew he was a nonce.

Hopefully with all the safeguards put in place now that football never experiences this level of abuse and cover up again.

True enough, but as a club we did eventually deal with it in a sensitive way, launching a full and thorough investigation and reaching out to abuse victims, whereas Crewe Alexandra's handling of it left a lot to be desired.

I'm actually going to give United the benefit of the doubt here and fully expect them to do the former.

The article says that the parent of one of the alleged victims presumed Ferguson would be involved with sacking Watts because a member of staff at United said "the boss" would handle it. But the article then explains that "the boss" was club secretary Ken Merrett.

A lot of the former players interviewed by the NYT have said that there were some rumours about Watts, but nothing substantial, so they presumed it was just silly hearsay. Years later, Ferguson then seems to have sent Watts flowers and visited him in hospital in 2009, when Watts was dying.
