Good morning all
I am looking for some assistance if anyone can help out at all
I run a small plastering and property Development company and I have recently taken on my step son who is doing an apprenticeship in joinery, the problem I have is I am not a joiner and he is falling behind in his college work,he is a brilliant grafter, very keen to learn, very loyal and punctual
I just wish I could teach him what he needs to learn
Is there anyone who either runs a joinery company or works for one who can take a young lad on so he can learn how to do roof structures, hang doors, fit spindles and staircases etc etc
He’s a blue as well,real sound kid

Do you not have any joiner mates you could 'loan' him to while you still pay his wage?

Most of my joiner mates are employed by big companies mate
It’s easier for them to be employed and have regular work! Almost all of them say the same ,they got tired of not knowing what work was coming in and wankers who don’t like paying their bills
The lad himself has been into loads of firms with his CV asking for a chance
It’s so disheartening because this kid is a diamond he wants to learn and earn some dough,I don’t want to lose him as he’s a valuable asset to my company but I can’t give him what he needs to pass his apprenticeship

Ok. Slightly left field suggestion as I know its probably not what he actually wants to do but have you thought of making him an apprentice plasterer? I'm guessing that that is more your specialism rather than joinery so you could actually teach him what you know and keep him with you. If your username is also your location then I know that Bolton College offer apprentice courses in plastering so not a million miles away from you from that side of things.

Thanks for the suggestion but he is very keen to become a joiner,he absolutely loves joinery,he has bought himself all the tools etc and he’s just about to take his driving test and hopefully buy himself a little van, like I say he’s a diamond this kid and I don’t want to lose him
Also my own son who is 17 as well works for me as an apprentice plasterer so I’ve already got an apprentice plasterer

Ah ok, was always a long-shot. Have you spoken to the provider who is doing the qualification element of the apprenticeship? Obviously it isn't in their interest to lose someone midway through a qualification and the hardest part of getting an apprenticeship is the job itself so it'd be a shame to lose someone who actually has that. Just thinking that if its one of the big colleges they may be able to put him in for some extra classes or something as they'll offer carpentry and joinery as a full-time course too. Issue with that is even if its possible you might lose him from site for a bit more time each week so swings and roundabouts but might be worth asking the question.

Yes mate I have spoken to his tutor and the guy responsible for his apprenticeship and we have exhausted all avenues hence asking on here
It really is frustrating the lack of someone willing to give a young kid a chance
His last employer tried ripping him off for money and used him as a labourer/sweeper upper and had him getting up at 4-30am to get to Bury, horrible little greedy man hence me stepping In and taking him on but I can’t offer him the experience in the field he requires and he’s gradually falling behind with his requirements

Yeh sorry thought you probably would have but throwing a few ideas out just in case! I hate it when people do that to apprentices. I used to work in apprenticeship recruitment and came across it so many times where young people are being taken advantage of and just being used as cheap labour. Such a difficult situation. I'm assuming he would be too young for any of the adult (so 19+) evening courses that a lot of colleges offer as well?

I’ll hire him!

In about 1990 absolutely loads us had a joinery competition in the car park at sandbach services after a night out raving.
I got one together in much less than a minute and won.

Not sure if that helps, mind.
