Electric cars

Think they might change this by the time we get to implementation.
There's only one way this per mile charge is going in the future and that's up. I can remenber this being mooted years ago as they way it will go when the tax takes from VED and fuel start to dry up as we're not allowed to buy ICE vehicles any more. Motoring will end up how it started, as a hobby for the well off.

It's always the way - entice people to switch to a new cheaper fuel source, and when they do tax the shit out of it. It happened with diesel and LPG, and now it's happening to the clowns with their 'environmentally friendly' electric cars.

Any idea how this tax is going to be implemented? Something to do with a payment based on mileage recorded at an MOT? Although that wouldn't work for new cars that do not need an MOT.

Some sort of system that requires you to enter your mileage, so honesty required, or uploading evidence?

Pretty sure the vast majority of EV's are connected to the Internet so I doubt it would be a big deal to require the manufacturer to report the milage figures to the DVLA and maybe a mandatory inspection by someone like the AA where that's not possible?

They asked Reeves up yesterday she didn’t have a fucking clue, I doubt the decision makers know either. I guarantee it will be one of their mates who will setup a company to do it and they’ll be on the board of directors.

If it's a Tesla, all your vehicle data belongs to the company anyway. Your car knows and reports everything back to Tesla despite what Elon says. Don't forget, he's the guy whose DOGE employee's pretty much stripped the data from every US government computer system they could get their hands on.

There will be some friend of the government minister who just happens to have a suitable software solution that could be finalised in just a couple of years or so for managing the whole thing for just a few billion I'm sure.

What next Liverpool owner John Henry having a share in the VAR software company who supply the Premier League! Yet won’t install big screens for VAR reviews…

How socialist of them, oh wait, hang on...

Below are wealth estimates and details for key Cabinet ministers in the current government:
  • Sir Keir Starmer (Prime Minister): His net worth is estimated to be around £7.7 million to £14 million.
  • Rachel Reeves (Chancellor of the Exchequer): Her and her husband's combined net worth is estimated at around £2 million to £3 million. Before becoming Chancellor, she stated that despite her MP's salary, the cost of living crisis left her "increasingly short" financially after paying bills.
  • David Lammy (Deputy Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor): His net worth is estimated at around £5 million. He has earned significant income from second jobs and speaking engagements in the past, including over £200,000 between December 2019 and January 2023.
  • Yvette Cooper (Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs): Her net worth (potentially combined with her husband Ed Balls) is estimated at around £4.5 million to £5 million.
  • Wes Streeting (Secretary of State for Health and Social Care): His wealth is primarily tied to his salary and donations for his political office. He has received significant donations from individuals and companies linked to the private health sector, which has been a topic of public discussion.
  • Ed Miliband (Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero): His net worth is estimated to be around £15 million.
  • Angela Rayner (former Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government): Her net worth has been estimated at £4.4 million to £4.7 million.
Struggling on, bless them.

What idiot is paying Lammy to speak the guys fucking useless.

I have a Toyota Hybrid that charges from the engine rather than plugs in so I've dodged any increases.

The difference in air quality from where I live on the coast to when I drive into Manchester for the football is very noticeable. As soon as I get off the motorway there's a smell and taste in the air.

It's typical though of this & any Government, push and preach Green stuff to us for years, realise they're not making money off it and then shaft people who have jumped.
They didn't just "realise they're not making money off it", this was the plan all along. Are they going to refund the tax that's paid on the electric to charge them or will it be a double whammy? As well as the tax on the car, full road tax, tax on servicing, tax on insurance etc, etc.

I've had mine a BMW iX2 M Sport for exactly 6 months, I use to and from the office (either Manchester City Center or Oldham) 4 days a week. do do general errands at weekends(to the match, shopping etc).

I have just check on the charger app and i have used 914kw since 31/05/25 @ 7p/kw with Utilities Warehouse so it has cost me £63.98 in 6 months. its an absolute no brainier.

I generally drive it in Eco mode, you do notice a massive difference on how quickly it drains the battery when in sport mode. I would imagine that now its getting cold that using the heater etc more will also drain it quicker.

If spending £64 in 6 months to run my car, instead of spending that every week (that would be £1,664 in the same 6 months on fuel) makes me and EV **** then I can live with that, whilst saving £3,200 a year!

Yep, just like carrying a smart phone you might as well be wearing an ankle tag. The data collection is already there for pay per mile. About £250 per 8500 miles apparently. Mayor of London also looking at bringing a ulez charge for EVs too.
Biggest scam under the guise of saving the planet ever.

I like the bit where she says "It's only right EV's pay towards the upkeep of the roads".
Err isn't that what road tax did. Now called VED. And what EV's now pay.
I thought inner city emissions was the biggest evil hence "emission zones"
Let's be clear. VED is a tax. Pay per mile is a tax. Emission Zones are a tax. Only a tiny portion goes on the roads.

It was always going to happen. Lost revenue from fuel duty and tax was going to have to come from somewhere.
Some government loons where proposing a "rubber tax" from emission from tyres FFS!

As it stands, another £240 for 8k miles is still peanuts. Add in VED at £195 is still less than £500 a year.
Even add at home charging cost £300? Still cheap motoring. The saving on servicing (oils/filters/add blu) alone cancels some of it out.
I've said previously, i would pay a premium for an EV over ICE now. I have both an i know what i prefer.

The one thing for sure, it won't stay at those 3p a mile prices.
