Enzo Maresca "high among candidates" to replace Guardiola if he leaves next summer

Pep has to be replaced. After this season, the following season or the season after. It's just inevitable.

Anyone else is a step down in many ways but not all. Pep isn't the infallible strategist and tactician I once thought he was. He has got plenty wrong over long periods of time to balance with the more things he has got right over a long period of time.

I welcome the new chapter whenever it happens. A new manager is always exciting. I would respectfully thank Pep as we have great managers and players in the past but I don't think we should be lighting candles and such.

I don't know who are the decent managers out there so I've no idea how likely any are to succeed at City but I'd back them and scrutinize them as I have all managers we've had... I loved many and Pep will definitely be amongst the ones I loved the most.

I would be astonished if City did not have an ongoing plan in place to replace Pep, with a shortlist of names/options defined and one that is constantly reviewed and updated.

Maresca could well be somewhere on that list.

Funny how we believe all this rubbish! Peps has never not fulfilled his contract! Any other club would kill it but we know how we work “No comment” it’s mad how our club lets the media just run with any bullshit..

I think Pep goes if we win the league this year. He stays one more year if we don't. Only right that we're planning for the future.

There'll be a lot of happy people on the Pep Performance thread over this news.

The main line is 'sources outside of the club'.

We've been here before when 'sources close to Pep' said it could be his last season a year or two ago... he then signed an extension.

I'd be amazed if he walked away halfway through his contract, doesn't seem like something he would do.

We'll know if it's bullshit when Pep is asked tomorrow.

Well he hasn't made it up. So whoever has told him he obviously trusts, because hes put his reputation on the line to discuss one of the biggest managerial changes in world football being potentially several months away.
He probably hasn't but whoever told him might have done with nefarious intent. As someone said even Pep probably doesn't know I don't believe anyone outside the club, apart from Pep's closest friends who wont say anything and for sure the very tight circle at City will not whimper a word, have any idea of what the club or Pep are doing

With respect to his reputation then he hasn't put it on the line, at all, he's a journalist and always has a back out that things change. In fact all he has said is that someone thinks Pep might go at the end of the season and Maresca is on the list but, he's not said about other candidates which is a little suspicious.

It all points to me that its Maresca or his agent

If he was convinced that Pep was leaving - or close to leaving - I promise you that he would have led with that and not the Maresca angle.

"Well-placed sources outside the club" and it's Jorge Mendes, isn't he? He's Maresca's agent, also have connections with Viana.

But I'd rather Enrique if he agrees to come.

The key, as noted elsewhere, is "well placed sources outside the club."

If Ornstein is reporting it, it's legit. He's hearing it and they are "reliable" sources. Question is how "reliable" they are for City information and how much they might be using their access and credibility with Ornstein to do a favor for Maresca/Mendes.

At large, it's not that controversial a story, other than the potential timeline. Of course City has a list to consider whenever Pep decides to move on. He's stayed longer than any of us could have dreamed, and there's been a list of potential replacements since he started. That Maresca, who was well liked by Pep and the club, and has been successful, all things considered, at Chelsea, would be on that list shouldn't really be news to anyone.

Pep's seemed more irritable than usual of late, and more directly critical in his pressers, IMO. Might not mean anything, but it might too.

Tbh I doubt even pep himself knows what he is going to do at the end of the season at this stage.

I’ve long thought pep would announce a departure rather than let his contract just run down (he wouldn’t want the distraction).

This would be his 10th year and has won it all at city. There isn’t really much left to do and with the World Cup this summer plenty of nations will be looking for a new manager for the next 4 year cycle (pep has long said he wants to manage at a World Cup) I can see it but again im sure nothing has been decided yet.

I also think the fact pep is losing his most trusted and possibly favourite player in Bernardo silva this summer js a big factor.

I think if we win the league pep will walk. If we don’t then it’s 50/50 imo. Ornstein isn’t just making this up
Pep may well leave at the end of the season, but I doubt Bernardo leaving will have an impact on his decision. Yes he likes him and don't we all, his decision will be based on personal issues and not the loss of Bernardo.
