It's not really reasonable to assume just because he can hear them, they can hear him. I would very much doubt VAR can hear commentators, as that would disturb their process and obviously sway them

I'm not convinced they cant hear. Sometimes they cant get the "nothing in that" quick enough.

I guess it's one of those things that are really hard to prove that they DON'T hear the commentary. However, if they do hear the commentary, it's not unlikely that it gets out at some point
