RIP Chris
You don't know the provenance of that song do you?Goner Rea
…too soon?
Wonder how much he made from ‘Driving Home For Christmas’ over the years. Must have been minted. Although he must have spent a fortune on petrol.
Best mates with Bob too - he'll be devastated by the news
Cheap & tackyGoner Rea

Honestly. How about a bit of respect.Goner Rea

I like the back story to the song.RIP Chris Rea
Amongst many other things he left with a wonderful legacy in one of the best Christmas songs ever.
In a Mini at that, that's a long journey there and back.I like the back story to the song.
Chris was broke, had parted with his manager, lost his recording contract, and was banned from driving. His gf had to collect him and take him back to Teeside. The song is the story of that drive.
Arriving home, they found an envelope on the doormat. Unbeknown to Chris, ‘Fool’ had been a big hit in the US, and the envelope contained a large cheque for royalties.
Good things can happen to good guys.
Wasn’t that Erasure?Honestly. How about a bit of respect.
Like I said, whether it’s ’RIP’ or a joke, both things are a form of showing how they’ve thought of the person being important enough to comment about with news of their death. So he meant nothing to you.
Does music ever touch you? Move you? Strike a chord?
His music meant a lot to me.
Got some belters lined up for when you snuff it.Wasn’t that Erasure?
Why does everything need to be serious these days? Making daft quips when someone famous dies is just British humour. It brings humour and lightheartedness to sad situations. It’s low brow, yes, but still just something that we do in our culture.
The thread title and opening post does exactly that.
Bringing a daft joke to the situation is no different to anyone bringing their daft ‘RIP’ nonsense to it. Nobody ‘rests’ in ‘peace’ when they’re dead, they’re just dead and that’s it. Food for worms and bacteria who live in soil is about the height of what happens to a person when they die.
Posting ‘RIP’ is just another form of coping when someone dies, just like bringing humour to a situation is, even if it’s silly humour. Posting ‘RIP’ is not any more respectful than posting a joke, it’s being delusional if anything. But both things are a form of showing how they’ve thought of the person being important enough to comment about with news of their death.
Once this goes down to Page 2, barely anyone here will give much thought to the bloke until they hear his song next Christmas. They probably haven’t given much thought to him once they pop onto the next thread they look at after posting their ‘RIP’ nonsense and moving along.
I’m sure it’s very sad for Chris Rea’s family and friends, but he’s just someone nobody here knew, who knew nobody here. We’re just in some random Manchester City fan chat room, it’s hardly like I’ve popped my head into his wake to say it.
@Mad Eyed Screamer got moaned at for doing the same thing in another thread when someone died earlier this year but there was nowt wrong when he did it either.
There was a story a few years ago where some comedian posted a Chris Rea joke on Facebook every day in the run up to Christmas, and Chris Rea got in touch with the fella to say how much he liked it. Maybe he’d prefer a stupid joke than a delusional ‘RIP’ if he were still alive?
Wasn’t that Ultravox? So he meant nothing to you.
