Some strange takes here as there always were about his performances. He isn't doing anything different now than he did for us. He plays his game. He controls the ball and the tempo, and he is capable of moments of top-quality. He is absolutely not thick, nor dense, in fact he is a highly sensitive young man with a wonderful capacity to empathise with those less fortunate than himself, a truly admirable skillset.
He was not the main man with us but he was a very capable cog in our wheel. He helped our team to achieve the most incredible performances in the history of the English game. His replacements are also given a hard time, and we must reach a point where we realise that our wide men have a tough job. Doku and Savinho are oft-criticised here, just as Jack was, and they face, most of the time, parked buses and the doubling up of defenders. That leads to regular passes back in to the central areas or the risk of lost possession and quick turnover, which is exactly what our opponents are waiting for, game after game.
In Rayan Cherki, we have a potential genius who can create against that challenge, and who is willing to take the risks required to unlock it. If our team accepts that, and covers for it, then he will be given the license to take the risks that others are not, or were not. His level of chance creation is unique in the world game, but let's be clear that it is allowed to thrive because of what is around him. It is always about the whole team and what is required at certain moments. The best teams are a blend of complimentary strengths, and as Cherki can afford to take risks in the inside-right position because Nunes has the physicality to cope with the fast break on his side, Nico O does for same for Doku.
Appreciate what we have and what we have had. These times are unique and quite unbelievable to a fan of 56 years.
