Doku when fit is obviously nailed on for that left side. I’d assume the plan is to play Semenyo right which he’s proved he’s more than capable of playing efficiently in this league. Cherki can play there too to at a very high standard, he can also play Phil’s position, Semenyo can also play Dokus position, Savinho isn’t as good as any but can play both sides when asked etc. It’s all about options.Semenyo is a good player and having a fantastic season, no doubt. But don't like this transfer for us.
I assume he would join as a rotation player for this season with a view to pushing into the first team next year. But what signal does this send to Doku who's in the form of his life and only just now has made the position his own?
This signing would have made more sense had we sold Savinho for £65m in August to Tottenham like we should have. Right now, it risks squad harmony to add further depth in a position where there's a lot of it elsewhere
Demoralising for Doku, pushes out Marmoush, adds complications for Foden & Cherki, further reduces Savinho's gametime and Bobb's opportunities without improving our best XI
Marmoush unfortunately would likely be resigned to Erling back up duties though which is why I suggested he’s likely off come July, and Bobb I fear isn’t even in Pep’s immediate thoughts now tbh which is a shame. He’s just not kicked on or looked the same player since that injury. A loan or sale with a buy back seems the smart option for all at this point.
Semenyo offers an actual goal threat from wide which none of our current options do. It’s that simple. Can’t worry about players feelings too much at a top club when they’re not delivering
