Merry Christmas 2025

Christmas merriment:
1. Went to our little local church close by for carols on Christmas Eve, ending with "Silent Night" with all the lights out and just candles lit. Lovely. Home in time to turn on tv for the end of Midnight Mass from St. Patrick's, old Cardinal Dolan's last as archbishop of New York before his retirement. He's been good. When it was done he went down the aisle beaming and shaking hands, his usual jocular self. At one point he took his shepherd's crook or whatever it is and jokingly hooked it round the neck of a little lad in the congregation (no, please don't!), the kid & his mum laughing fit to burst.

2. They sang "While shepherds watched .." during the service. Reminded me of being at grammar school in the early '60s when a mate & I changed the words to "While shepherds washed their socks by night/All seated in a tub/the angel of the Lord came down/And gave them all a scrub." We thought it was hilarious till the headmaster overheard and sent us to wait in shame outside his office before wielding the stick. Happy days.
