Rest in peace John Robertson. One of the greatest ever Scottish players of all time and indeed one of the very best from these islands. I loved watching John Robertson hairing down the left wing - a great, great winger who could cross with both feet. He was key to Nottingham Forest being English League Champions and twice European Champions, providing the cross for Trevor Francis to head the winner in 1979 and scored the winner in the 1980 final. What a great player. Thanks for the memories. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Rest in peace Sir.

I lived in Nottingham for a couple of years in the 1970s as a student. He was a superb player. Forest were a pretty good Division 1 (now Premier) league team at the time but I moved on before Clough became manager.

That was a fantastic team. Robertson, Withe, Woodcock, Gemmill, Needham, Shilton, McGovern, Francis etc etc. For a provincial team to come from pretty much nowhere and achieve what they did was staggering, really. I know it was a different era, but it makes Leicester's achievement in 2016 look like small beer in comparison. League champions and back to back European Cup triumphs. That Clough chap knew his stuff.

What does "provincial team" mean ?

A team from outside of what would be perceived as the major powerbases at the time. i.e, Liverpool in England, Munich in Germany, Madrid and Barca in Spain, Milan in Italy. And from what would be seen as a "smaller" urban area.
Yeah Clough did it with Derby too, it was much more common in those days to win titles with "small" clubs, his big rival Revie did something similar with Leeds, they were a nothing club before his arrival despite playing in a pretty large area.

Clough's teams did it playing football, whereas Revie's dirty Leeds sides were thugs in football kits.
