Rock Evolution – The History of Rock & Roll - 1998 - (page 271)

For me 1993 was kind of a dud year musically with one enormous exception — my second favo(u)rite record of all time was released in 1993. As at some point I want to nominate it on the album thread, and no one has touched upon it yet, I will leave it alone for now although some of you can probably guess. Still thinking through singles but The Breeders’ Cannonball was far and away the one I like most from 93.
Is it Pablo Honey.....?

An absolute classic that as is Black Sunday! Listened to that album a lot back in the day and Insane is one of those songs that everyone knows! Didn't realise it was so old though!!
Remember them doing this on The Word.
In the world of sometimes dodgy live rap performances this was one of the best.

There is a better hip hop album this year but don't want to waste my last pick so hoping someone else puts something on from it

1993 wasn't the best year musically IMO and most of my favourites from this year have already been selected by Moon Town in his excellent write-up. I'd also single out Truganini, what a brilliant song!

There are at least a couple of tracks I'd like to nominate though, the first being La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh), by the Manic Street Preachers, probably my favourite song of theirs. The second is Wild Wood by Paul Weller, which I think was probably his best output since the Jam.

Did you ever see their performance on Jools Holland later in summer '93? This song is exceptional. It's on YouTube if you haven't.

I don't like The Jam but Wild Wood is an excellent album. It's almost like in those years since the 70s, Paul Weller' has grown up and shrugged off that mediocrity and posturing.

I appreciate the note, that's the best compliment I've had on song selection, thanks!

Just give an initial listen to both songs, they both will be making my later write-up, great selections.

The Paul Weller track in particular is fantastic that I remember hearing, but wasn't sure when it initially came out.

Also, I could swear more artists that just Portishead have covered it, but maybe someone else here knows.

Personally I think 1993 is a good year for music.
Debuts by Tindersticks,PJ Harvey,The Verve,Sabres Of Paradise and 36 Chambers by Wu Tang Clan.
Blur also released their best album in my opinion Modern Life Is Rubbish.

But for my last pick I'm going for one of my Top 30 of all time albums. A real mixed bag of styles and influences.
They had some big hits after this but Martin Carr never put a collection of songs together better than these.
From the album Giant Steps

The Boo Radleys - Lazarus

One last one from me... as I said back in 92, the early 90s saw the arrival of rap/metal - basically rapping over metal riffs. It created a new sound which had the punchiness of metal with the energy of rap. Some great examples were Rage Against The Machine - the whole album, Faith No More - Epic, Run DMC/Aerosmith - Walk This Way and Anthrax/Public Enemy - Bring The Noise. I still think that the great story of the 90s is the amount of 'cross-pollination' between styles - rap/metal/indie/dance - where ever they mix, the energy is incredible.

But this year saw the release of the Judgement Night Soundtrack which was a poor film but had some great collaborations between rap/rock bands. The best tracks off this is:

Faith No More & The BOO Yaa Tribe - Another Body Murdered

Blimey, just noticed that 1993 only has All Apologies from In Utero! Surely the playlist needs some more from that iconic album?

Nirvana - Heartshaped Box
Nirvana - Scentless Apprentice

Also, no Beck? The breakout single was absolutely incredible to hear when it first came out, nothing sounded like it.

Beck - Loser

Argh, only reason for no Beck from me is I had Loser down as 94 (I'm doing the write-up) as that’s when Mellow Gold came out and when the single peaked, but you’re right that its original release was 93. EVERY critic who votes on such things has it as a 94 song. The “year” convention really is frustrating.

Yeah, when I researched my original songs each year, I always check the first release as the singles sometimes win, and in this case it did, to avoid potential prior year poachings. ;-)

I thought I’d done that by making sure to check the albums but this stupid single was out almost a YEAR before Mellow Gold.

Main list of best songs I look at has “Loser” as best song of 1993.
